Freight Rate Ruling Could Reshape Small Town Trade

The Interstate Commerce Commission ruling cuts west and south class rates about 10 percent while raising east of Illinois Indiana line rates 10 percent. The decision could spur new small business and decentralization to the South and West, but may harm certain New York condiments makers and Arkansas shippers, with impacts varying by buyer location and shipping method. Utilities and manufacturers face adjustments as war-era rate patterns shift toward postwar realities.
