Dairying Strengthens Iowa Communities Despite Fewer Farms
Iowa dairy farming remains a stable income source with about 750,000 cows, down from a million a decade ago, yet milk and cream values approach 200 million dollars yearly. Most milk serves manufacturing like butter and cheese, while only one fifth fluid milk is consumed locally. Dairy farmers rely on out of state markets, supporting national dairy campaigns, and on farm cooling, storage, and specialized equipment to handle bulk milk. Dairying drives higher electricity use and requires significant capital, feed, and veterinary services, making dairy men valuable community members.
