The Elgin American Legion Auxiliary met at Mrs. M J Blockhus home with 26 members present. New officers were installed by Mrs C B Sehori and officers named include Ed Wenger president and Geo H Nickels secretary. Several chairmen were appointed and reports given on Sunshine and finances. The group voted to send $10 to the Korean Foundation and selected delegates to Cedar Rapids convention. A cookie shipment to Glenwood State School was arranged and farm cleanup notes advised on rat control and seed oats pricing.

Elkader Iowa grand jury reconvened July 6 and recessed until August 3 to complete county and town investigations. County attorney Robert Coon said state investigators will continue probing county affairs. an Elkader town books audit is expected. The board chairman said no dismissals occurred and rumors of misused funds were unsubstantiated. The three gasoline privileges were revoked and wages raised to 6 cents per hour for traveling work.
John A. Overholt, former chief for the performance rating section of the Civil Service Commission, proposed eliminating his own unit. His plan was adopted but he was rewarded with a $275 cash award a certificate and a new position instead of unemployment.
August prospects from U S Department of Agriculture marketing specialists forecast plentiful beef especially cheaper cuts, plus ample broilers, fryers, fresh and frozen fish. Locally grown vegetables like sweet corn, beets, tomatoes, green onions, celery and cabbage should be abundant, with shipped peaches, pears and plums in plentiful supply though Colorado peaches may be cheaper now than around Labor Day. Milk and other dairy products, lard, vegetable shortening, salad oils and table fats also expected to be plentiful.
Mr Gilbert Lofisgard underwent eye surgery Monday morning in Marshalltown now at Evangelical Deaconess hospital room 317 third floor. He is scheduled for a second procedure about four days later. He entered Friday and his husband was present during the operation. Home from Hospital Ambor Yearous returned Tuesday from Dubuque hospital and is nearly back to normal after an earlier accident. doctors urge several weeks of complete rest.

Harvey Guenther a 27 year old Sumner farmer is recovering after a tumble from a hay rack left him with a broken neck and injuries.

Provide a disinfecting method for toilet bowls using chloramine solution and vinegar. Instruct pouring 1 to 2 cups of chloramine and 2 tablespoons of vinegar into the bowl. Instruct swishing the solution across interior surfaces and letting it sit for one hour or overnight.
Joe Davis Jr a 36 year old Avoca man sustained the loss of an eye when weed spray sprayed into his eye during mixing despite attempts to save the eye. The incident underscores dairy management concerns and the need for safety practices in farm work.
