Lehman lands the Marion Lutheran church steeple contract. Copper worth over $200 was used and shaped locally before hauling out. Factory beans flow in. about fifty workers were packing Tuesday, total crew about 75. Clara Winkler, longtime teller at Elgin Savings Bank, resigned.

Elgin Iowa July 6 1953 Council Proceedings

Elgin Iowa town council met in regular session on July 6 1953. Present were Boyle Capper Doan Muehlethaler Sehori with Mayor Falk absent Doan acted as mayor pro tem. Minutes of the previous meeting approved. Bills audited and allowed in General Fund Waterworks Fund and Street Construction Fund with payments to Kohls Meinhard Hardware Don's D-X Service Lehman Welch Interstate Power Co etc. An application from John W Gilson for a fish license on the streets granted for one year at ten dollars. Council approved purchasing a town typewriter. Budget hearing set for July 20 at 8:00 p m. Adjournment.

Cattle on Feed July 1 Up 6 Percent

Iowa feedlots hold 901000 head on July 1 1953 the largest for the date since 1948 stock levels show a 6 percent rise from July 1 1952 and 22 percent from July 1 1951 grain and feed stocks on July 4 1953 exceed last year and 10 year average while corn stocks near record levels. Some southwestern Iowa farmers cool cream at milking using second–hand refrigerators and ice water noting higher profits from selling high quality cream with minimal extra effort.
