Gov Hughes Signs Largest Tax Bill in Iowa History

Governor Harold Hughes signed House Bill 703, a sweeping tax package expected to raise over 100 million dollars. The measure raises the sales tax to three percent, extends it to more than 50 services, doubles the corporate tax, and reshapes local tax structure while distributing school aid and setting property assessments at 27 percent of fair market value. About 25 legislators and representatives from groups like the Iowa State Education Association and Iowa Farm Bureau attended the signing in the governor’s office. He framed the action as a bipartisan effort to overhaul Iowa’s tax system and finance public schools with broader, fairer relief.
