Draft call and party temper in Iowa politics described
The Koreas situation prompted Iowa to announce an allots 844 men for the first draft, to be army and navy bound by Sept. 30. This news quieted the Democratic state convention and will influence the Republican parley in Des Moines. Iowa's draft will draw 344 men from 100 boards, with county boards receiving notices from state headquarters. Boone county led by meeting its quota, Marion county next, while towns reduced corn acreage and futures for harvest near prewar levels. Veterans benefits for Korea service remain limited under GI Bill rules, with eligibility tied to prior wars and wartime disability pay possible only for some.
