In the Mediterranean, sailors aboard the destroyer USS Melvin guard carriers and submarines, including Herman L Capper, machinist's mate third class USN, son of Norris D Capper of Elgin, as the Melvin visits ports such as Athens Oran Gibraltar Istanbul Cannes Golfe Juan St Jean Naples and Beirut. Leonard M West called home from San Diego, son on USS Nereus Sub Tender. Capt Gerald Schori and wife from Baltimore arrived in Elgin to visit. he served in Japan two years and will be stationed at Mineral Wells Texas.
