Elgin Town Council met May 26 1951 to sell 5000 in Waterworks bonds. Elgin State Bank submitted the low bid of 5000 at 4 percent with semiannual interest. Resolution passed to issue bonds dated June 1 1951 bearing 4 percent, payable June 1 and December 1, with seal and registration upon payment.
Georgia May Schori devoted 20 years to helping the handicapped through physical therapy. A graduate of Upper Iowa University and Harvard, she trained at SAPVETT and worked at Mayo Clinic and Shriner’s Hospital in Minneapolis. She served in the Navy hospital corps, spent 19 months at Warm Springs, aided polio work, and now leads a Sioux City center promoting home treatment and therapy opportunities.
Miss Rose Elia Chase youngest daughter of W B Chase Volga and James A Hermen son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Hermen Bigin wed at the Little Brown Church Nashua on Thursday afternoon June 23. He is a graduate of Elgin High School and with the Elgin Echo. she from Volga school. He now a partner owner of the Echo.
W Hughes longtime Elgin Echo editor died at his Postville home on July 5. Funeral services were held there and later at Mt Carroll AL. Park space along Center street was being marked by Marshal Hunsberger and Deputy Kohler. Mrs E J Halverson and Norma, visiting Mel Kohler, left for Chisago Minn after learning Mr Halverson was ill with inflammatory rheumatism. Frederick Sutter, youngest son of Dan and Mrs Sutter, cut his leg badly with a hoe and was taken to Decorah hospital.
A severe storm caused significant damage as lightning hit the Hara Friederich farm, splintering the hoghouse and injuring no animals. The Beumer residence suffered a fire and holes were burned in a structure, while a 420 mile trip occurred in a single day as plans unraveled for a forgery case stretching fifteen years.
