Population decline may persist in Iowa towns

Stucky of the State University bureau of business and economic research cautions that population loss does not always signal town decline. He notes 40 percent of Iowa towns losing people between 1950 and 1980 still saw rising retail sales, driven by farmers buying more inputs. He cites 198 towns with under 200 residents, 102 of which lost population in the last decade. one example fell from 120 in 194 to 8 in 1950 and 40 in 1960. He predicts half of Iowa farms may close in coming decades as farm counts shrink across all sizes. Population will concentrate in a few counties as out-migration continues.
