Years of Life and Work of the Yearous Family
In Wadena on June 29 1910 Rev Jasper Moore records the life of Mr and Mrs Yearous who lived in West Union the first two years of marriage. Mrs Yearous recalls her first day of school at four when she spoke only Swiss and later graduated from Elgin High School in 1907 as the class’s sole living member. She taught rural schools for three years before marriage. Yearous is a lifelong farmer and outdoorsman who hunts and roams the woods barefoot from spring to fall. They remodeled their farm home and Mrs Yearous never used a washing machine preferring board washing for weekly exercise. Her hobbies are flowers and a well kept lawn. The Yearouses enjoy good health. They rent land but Yearous assists neighboring farmers and cares for three rural telephone lines. He credits Indian heritage from his grandmother Rebecca Jones Doty for his ruggedness. They enjoy recounting horse and buggy days.
