The Isthmian Canal Commission recommends accepting the Panama Canal Company offer to sell all rights and unfinished work to the United States for 40 million dollars. The report estimates total canal costs Panama route 184,283,358 and Nicaragua route 139,804,082, with title to land and railroad rights included. The commission stresses potential land acquisition costs and Colombia's cooperation as key factors for final US action.
Romance colors the Chicago visit of Admiral and Mrs. Winfield Scott Schley in late January. They will dine at Mrs. John Morris’s Grand Boulevard home, the host who first introduced them when Schley was a cadet at Annapolis and Mrs. Schley a young woman. An entertainment committee will oversee events during their stay.
In Chicago on January 22 Admiral Schley warned he would shoot anyone who mentions Santiago at the Hamilton club banquet to honor his visit. President Munger released a statement saying no speaker will discuss the recent court inquiry. The admiral told Munger privately that he would carry out the threat if the word is spoken.
In Cleveland Ohio on January 23 a statue symbolizing peace was presented to Senator Mark A. Hanna by about a hundred of his friends. The gift honors his work to foster better labor and capital relations following a conference in New York. Hanna expressed deep appreciation for the tribute.
