Julius W Schmidt of Burkhardt Wisconsin shot his wife three times in the head Sunday night then killed himself with a shot through the temple. The wife survived, expected to recover, and none of the shots hit the brain. The couple had quarreled and the incident occurred after putting children to bed near the kitchen stove. Schmidt, described as sanely jealous, fired at his wife before ending his own life. The couple resided in Burkhardt village near the mill.

Found face downward, slight facial cuts observed. coroner ruled death from heart disease after careful investigation. Berlin January 14 The German emperor plans to have his yacht Hohenzollern christened by Miss Roosevelt with Emperor William’s telegram to Roosevelt praising the US and announcing the yacht’s cross over for the ceremony. Roosevelt replies in German expressing welcome for Admiral Prince Henry and friendship toward Germany. New York January 12 The steel schooner yacht for the German emperor at Shooter’s Island progresses rapidly and is expected to launch around February 26.
Capt. W. J. D. Horne of the Ninth Cavalry U S A attempted suicide with a knife in a store owned by A Dalporta Dalporta struggled to restrain him after a clash over a sharp knife in which Dalporta was injured. The two men towered six feet and weighed about 200 pounds each, a crowd intervened and Horne was subdued and hospitalized. He is expected to recover. Horne recently arrived from Manila where he was ill with typhoid fever and had been invalid, with a retiring board due soon.
A court martial in Erfurt sentenced a military reservist to one and a half years in prison for looting during a recent expedition in China. The case arose from disturbances linked to the Far East operation, with authorities citing misconduct during the campaign.
