Snow Real Blanket for Clover Fields
Dr. A J Pleters a forage crop expert of the US Department of Agriculture explains alfalfa and clover wintering. He notes imported seed is often inferior to native seed and failure in one region may not occur elsewhere with similar extremes. Snow fall protects crops in northern winters by shielding them from extreme ground temperatures. He cites Italian clover near Chatham Michigan suffering less winter kill than in Lansing or Ohio due to several feet of snow cover.

Three Requirements of a Good Alfalfa Seed Bed
The article outlines three key seedbed requirements for alfalfa in eastern Kansas: fine firm soil, ample moisture at seeding, and available plant nutrients, with August as the best seeding time. It describes shallow tillage after a grain harvest, immediate disking to incorporate stubble, frequent shallow cultivation to curb weeds, and cautions against excessive disking. It also advises using a cultipacker if the soil is not firm below the surface.

Husking Corn With Hogs Economical Modern Practice
A 1930s style note advocates hogging down corn as highly economical, stressing the need for a suitable supplement. It cites alfalfa, rape, and clover as top forage, with tankage or skim milk as alternatives when forage is scarce. A mix of tankage 70 parts, inseeds 15 parts, and shorts 15 parts outperforms tankage alone, with skim milk fed at eight pounds per corn pound or about a gallon and a half per head daily.
Practical Plan Outlines Silage Filling Steps
Outline describes using a small silage cutter and farm tractor or gas engine to reduce labor in filling silos. It notes attachments for corn binders to lift green bundles, field silage cutters eliminating hand labor, and corn cribs with portable or stationary elevating devices to shelled kernels. The process moves corn to pigs, cattle, or country elevator, driven by machinery rather than manual labor.
