Amanda Phillips obituary and funeral rendered in Postville

Funeral services were held Thursday in Postville for Amanda Phillips who died Monday afternoon February 6 at the home of her daughter Mrs Walter Falk in Elgin. Born April 25 1876 at National she later moved near Postville and attended West Grove School. She married Alonzo Phillips September 25 1894 and they settled in Postville. Survived by four daughters Mrs Winifred Sullivan Cedar Rapids Mrs Walter Falk Elgin Mrs Woltern Baylor Elgin and Harold Phillips Dixon with one daughter Ethel dead. four grandchildren, one sister and five brothers. Her husband died June 27 1936 and a son and two siblings preceded her.

Scouts Attend NRA Clinic At West Union

Nine Boy Scouts join a Tuesday January 31 shooting clinic in West Union sponsored by the National Rifle Association and Scout Council. Balz Kamm Jr lectures on gun safety. boys test firearms at a courthouse basement target range. Weekly sessions continue Wednesdays. certificates will be awarded to qualified Scouts. Leland Capper and Robert Hanson lead a Saturday overnight hike and outdoor meals at the lodge. Lincoln’s birthday pilgrimage to a local monument honors the leader. A Court of Honor is set for February 23 at Elgin High School. a Camp Ingawanis film will be shown. nucleated invites extend to Scouts from north Fayette County.

Elgin then lost to Aurora 56 to 18 in the semi finals, with Grimm scoring 10. Aurora beat Lamont in the finals and Winthrop earned consolation.

Mr and Mrs George Upham of Fredericksburg observed their 72nd wedding anniversary on January 31. He was born in 1857 and she in 1858. The first 80 years of their marriage were spent on a farm near Fredericksburg.
