Los Angeles columnist Berle Strauch recounts completing a two three month tour of Europe as a lone traveler. She describes difficulties faced while traveling solo and suggests the first trip would benefit from a guided tour group.
European snapshots describe Paris rain soaked sidewalks from famous cafes to Notre Dame and the Louvre exit, with Eiffel Tower near rusty ironwork. Also notes Swiss villages, Lake Lucerne, Jungfrau view, Innsbruck Alpine streets, Austrian Tyrol dress, and Vienna border quirks with a red star seen across the Danube.
The writer recalls a vast public district near the Kaine Palace where four powers police in a rotating ceremony. He describes Vienna’s fall colors in the woods and the cosmopolitan cafe culture, then mentions Healy’s cities Venice Florence Rome and Naples as distinct pasts. Mallorca in the Balearics attracts many Americans for climate beauty and cheap diving, though the narrator cannot report on it.
Six rabid skunk cases were reported in Clayton County in 185¢ and one in Fayette County. North and south counties had none. Statewide totals reached 305 cases with 157 in skunks, 44 in dogs, 31 in cats, 5 in cattle, 5 in foxes, and four other scattered cases.
The Payette County Co operative Breeding Association held its annual meeting at the Farm Bureau building on January 25. Isaac Paul and A Porter were elected to three year terms. Speakers included Dr John Berrick extension veterinarian at Iowa State, Melvin Wangsess county extension director, and Dr J W Pirie and Dave Van de Berg of the Cedar Rapids based Artificial Breeding group. Finances showed breeding price changes effective February 1 and a 1954 business dividend of $2315 to members.
The Progress Club met Monday February 7 at Mrs Benry McMillans home. Twenty members answered roll call with a current event. Dalene Shaffer and Evelyn Orth presented declamatory selections. Mrs Robert D Wilson reported on women's clubs in other lands. Mire Gus Krueger reported on the Iowa Club Worker. Mrs Lorence Mueklethaler and Elmer Meyer spoke on textile paintings and basket weaving crafts class at Fayette. The next meeting will be March 1 with a dinner for the husbands.
About 27 Upper Midwest university students earned dean's list honors with GPAs of at least 3.0. Local names include Frances Blue of Arlington with 4.00, Johnn Ficken of Wadena at 4.0, Ina Hoth of Lamont at 5.67, Ja mann Mark of Eigin at 4.00, Keith Tennis of Lamont at 2.31, and Robert Whittenbaugh of Wadena.
The January 15 1960 index shows prices received by Iowa farmers at 241 percent of the 1910-14 base, up 3 points for the month but 15 percent below the January 1959 level. Livestock and livestock products rose 3 points to 55, while dairy and poultry categories showed modest gains and milk wholesale declined.
Followed by Mr Eekhoff and Mrs Zekhhoff after a miscue, both cars veered into a dead end ditch. Mrs Zekhhoff’s vehicle ended with its front wheels atop her husband’s car. No injuries reported.

A Study Club meeting at Elerta Library discussed leadership roles with Mrs BP Biraudh and Mrs C B Gcori among officers. Director W J Grove and Mrs Mere Kari attended as the Bock committee led the session. Ivan Torkeleon g presented colored illustrations of travel through Norway and Germany.

Roll call for the Social Hour Club earned 17 members and two guests a focus on a Savorite February Birthday. Mrs Randolph Reier joined, and Mrs Virgil Torson along with Mrs Melbert Meyer led lessons on care for the sick at home. A Valentine exchange ended with a bingo session. The March meeting is set for Mrs Louis Becker's home.
Bob Ferguson of Casey collided with a bog on a nearby highway in a recent incident. The bog sustained fatal injuries. About $198 in damage was caused to the automobile. Lamb bones are noted as making nourishing broths and soups.
