Postville area man 45 dies after illness

John Ewing a Postville High School graduate and longtime creamery worker died January 24, 1961 at Postville Community Hospital at age 45 after a lingering illness. He married Dorothy Olson in 1926 and had two sons Richard and Ronald. He leaves a daughter-in-law Marilyn and grandson Paul Keith, along with his mother and stepfather, three sisters and one brother. Casket bearers included local and area men from Farley Elgin and Ames.

Contouring and Terraces Cut Iowa Soil Losses

Iowa farmers are urged to reduce soil erosion as over half the cropland used clean tilled crops last year. Contouring on slopes over 3 percent lowers losses, while building terraces breaks long slopes, enabling higher use of land. Terraces and practices under ACP cost sharing, up to about 70 percent, timber technical help from Soil Conservation Districts.

West Central of Maynerd defeated Valley High 49 to 45 to end Valley’s five game winning streak. Tom Bender led West Central with 23 points, Nate Bender added 13, while Roger Torson scored 21 and Carl Erickson 10 for Valley. The game stayed tight, trailing by only three at halftime and finishing with a late Valley rally.
