William Willis Ewing son of William S. and Hannah Ewing was born at Postville March 21, 1915. His early youth was spent in the rural Postville community.
John Ewing a Postville High School graduate and longtime creamery worker died January 24, 1961 at Postville Community Hospital at age 45 after a lingering illness. He married Dorothy Olson in 1926 and had two sons Richard and Ronald. He leaves a daughter-in-law Marilyn and grandson Paul Keith, along with his mother and stepfather, three sisters and one brother. Casket bearers included local and area men from Farley Elgin and Ames.
The Elgin Iowa Town Council held multiple special sessions in January 1961 to discuss final sewer assessments. Objections were heard and various assessments were reduced, with a formal resolution correcting final assessments adopted by a 5 to 0 vote. The January 27 meeting lacked Councilman Wilson and took no definite action on other matters.
Iowa farmers are urged to reduce soil erosion as over half the cropland used clean tilled crops last year. Contouring on slopes over 3 percent lowers losses, while building terraces breaks long slopes, enabling higher use of land. Terraces and practices under ACP cost sharing, up to about 70 percent, timber technical help from Soil Conservation Districts.
Robert Wilson age 81 died at Postville hospital Sunday night January 29 after a short illness. Funeral services under Muehlethaler funeral home direction set for 1:30 at the chapel and 2:00 at St Pauls Methodist Church on Wednesday. Surviving: two daughters Mrs W J Leighty Boise Idaho and Mrs B A Grover No Hollywood California, two sons Clifton and Robert D Elgin, four sisters Mrs Alice Winkler Mrs Thomas Howard Elgin California and Mrs Kathryn Brabham Corona California and Mrs Charlotte Conner Rochester Minnesota.
Martin H. Minihan, 69, died January 25 at his Elkader home after years of heart trouble. Services were held January 28 at Sacred Heart Church in Volga, with Rev. Conrad R. Schailan presiding and burial in Sacred Heart cemetery. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Daniel A. Gorman attended.
World War I veteran Mr. Minihan born September 16 1891 in Clayton county Town died recently in Elgin. Survived by wife Mildred Owens two daughters Betty Nagel Dorothy Souvignier and Vivian Minihan two sons William and Patrick plus nine grandchildren and siblings. American Legion Post 352 of Elgin conducted military services. card of thanks from the Minihan family.
Charles I Hader born November 28 1883 on a farm near El kader died January 17 1961 at Veterans Hospital Iowa City after a two year illness He served in France during WWI and lived mainly in the Elin der Elgin area He married Johanna Ras Munsen in Denver Cole January 31 1927 they had two daughters Charl yn and Jean He belonged to Masonic Lodge Elkader Scottish Rite Cedar Rapids and American Legion Elgin Masonic rites were held January 14 at Witt Chapel Elkader funeral January 20 at Witt Chapel Elkader with Rev Mace Crandall Interment Eastside Cemetery Elkader Pallbearers listed.
Charles Hader funeral included graveside military rites by the Elgin American Legion Post. Survivors include wife Johanna Elkader two daughters Jean Dohrer Jackson Junction and Charlyn Huggins Ewa Hawaii three grandchildren Bille Dohrer Pamela and Gregory Huggins one brother Albert N Hader Golden Cole two sisters Mebel Holmquist Buffalo Minn Ida Hader Minneapolis one half sister Ruby Yauslin Clermont others attended from Golden Clermont and Elgin Card of Thanks expressed gratitude to relatives friends neighbors and organizations for memorials and comforting words to the family
Harold Schmitt of Dunlap suffered a dislocated back when a semi-trailer truck struck between the door of a car and the truck, causing injuries.
West Central of Maynerd defeated Valley High 49 to 45 to end Valley’s five game winning streak. Tom Bender led West Central with 23 points, Nate Bender added 13, while Roger Torson scored 21 and Carl Erickson 10 for Valley. The game stayed tight, trailing by only three at halftime and finishing with a late Valley rally.
Allen Foxwell son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Foxwell earned second highest score on the written test by the 4 H Sharpshooters Gun Club led by Harold Tope with Ken Fink assisting. Bob Troutman of West Union won first. The NRA affiliated program teaches rifle safety and marksmanship. classes meet biweekly in the West Union courthouse basement.
