Hatchability of eggs is inheritable. Demand for farms rose in 1936–36. Commercial feeds on Dec 1 averaged 55 percent above a year ago. The 1936 winter began like last year per the U S weather bureau. Barns closed to wind complicate high quality milk by absorbing odors. The 1937 agricultural conservation program covers seedings losses from the 1936 drought. Caution urged with silage fed to horses. introduce gradually with dry roughage, 10–15 pounds daily max. January is home butchering week for proper meat curing temperatures. Ham souring is prevented by chilling carcasses below 40 degrees or with salt. For good winter egg production keep pullets healthy, housed clean, and fed properly. Common winter diseases are colds and roup but manageable with proper care. Pullets tend to lay at expense of summer fat, risking weight loss and neck molt. Consider protein feed over grinding roughage as six commonly cited advantages are disputed. grinding does not improve digestibility. Grain–roughage mixing in paunch has limited value.
