A fire at the W. R. Conrad home in Lytton started in a barrel of cabbages. Each cabbage was paper wrapped and overheated by spontaneous combustion. The blaze burned away the barrel's lower section before discovery.
A horned owl disrupted power service for about fifteen minutes when it damaged a power line a mile north of the city. Linemen found the bird dead, its 40 inch wings scorched in two places.
