The Marion Busy Bees 4-H Club held a December 3 meeting at Dianne Wenger’s home. Eighteen members answered the roll call “What I Want for Christmas.” Five guests attended. Members’ fair money was distributed and bills were approved for payment. Initiation of new members Karen Seitz Marilyn Butikofer and Linda Medberry followed games and gift exchanges. The next meeting will be December 30 at Charlan Butikofer’s home.
Leaders presented a small inti gift to a beach girl. Lunch was served by Mrs. Lester Wenger and Dianne. Vera Coffin, representative, organized the event.
The Elgin Library Board honors Mrs. Henry McMillian with a gift edition of All The Women of the Bible by Edith Deen. New acquisitions include Sorghum Cook Book and eighteen other titles for various readers, with October circulation around 900.
Valley Tigerettes coached by Milt Mohs defeated Garnaville 67 to 33 on Saturday night in Garnavillo. Valley led 21 5 in the first quarter and extended the advantage each period as they outscored Garnaville in every stanza to secure a decisive win.
Annette Meyer fueled a 26 point scoring burst to renew the Tiger em ettes. Susan Kingery followed with 14 points as Garnaville trailed 16 8 4th. The Tigers posted 16 points in the second and fourth quarters while Garnaville managed 8 12 and 10.
The Valley High Fresh-Soph team dropped a thriller to Elkader 59 to 54 Friday night. Steve Halverson led Valley with 21 points, Sam Roberts added 14, while Elkader’s Patrick totaled 14 for the Tigers.
Valley B Team defeated Garnaville 37 to 23 to extend their winning streak to four. The Tigerettes led 12 to 3 after the first quarter and 18 to 6 at halftime, with strong defense and efficient shooting. Joyce Larson led with 16 points, followed by Alice Hackmann and Nancy Alderson with 11 and 10 respectively.
A fragmented recipe lists mixing instructions for a sugar syrup and sauce with sorghum butter sugar water salt and vinegar. The garbled text references pouring over a large quantity and mentions an unclear name Prifton Miller.
Susan Hofer and William Torkelson Jr. were married in a Dec 7 ceremony at Norway Lutheran Church St Olaf. The couple, both Elkader graduates, plan Cedar Rapids as their home after a reception for about 225 guests.
Elgin residents hosted and visited many neighbors over the weekend. Alma Peterson Arlene Leeman visited Libbie Larson while Max Lehman and wife returned from Chicago. Walter Medberry’s guests included Oscar Lamphier van Frieden and Clara Muehler. Sunday visitors to Myron Moore included George Poppenhagen and Howard Poppenhagen Fayette and Donald Page. Gerald Schneider and family visited Selma Kohls and Bertha Lehman with Anna Schupbach and Ida Christen at Metta Krueger’s supper. Orvin Olson and family Karen and Joan were Friday supper guests of another couple.
A string of social visits is noted as guests and family members, including Mrs. Harold Pfister and children, Mrs. Randine Hanson and Bernard, and Mrs. C. B. Schori with coffee guests, move between Cedar Rapids area homes and West Bend trips to see friends and relatives. Several locals such as Leonard Debuhr and Mrs. Ralph Hanson are mentioned visiting homes in Oran Nutting and Marvin Anderson.
In eighth grade science classes, a new unit on elements has been introduced. Students studied elements in compounds and other materials, focusing on how elements combine and behave in various substances.
In seventh grade activity notes social studies test hints at American topics. Language Arts lessons cover adverbs and directions with make up tests. A sports highlight notes Walkrie grade boys defeating New Albin 34 18 as Valley dominates to a 26 10 halftime and 34 18 final.
Valley narrowly topped an unidentified opponent as the game closed with a four leg final. Paul Fauver led Valley with 17 points while the fast break caused frequent transitions. The report notes a disrupted schedule and unclear opponent details but highlights Valley's offense and a surprise in tournament play.
The District Court announces probate proceedings for the will and testament of Rosina Nee Otedhe. Proceedings occur in Jefferson County with clerk Herbert C. Klammer presiding. date December 9, 2003.
