Thanksgiving gatherings populate Brainard area homes with extended families and friends. Names include Fenner Peters Boyer Reeder and Gehring clans visiting Clermont Steamboat Rock Morning Sun and West Union, plus Fayette Lime Springs Ogden and New Hampton connections.
Bob Martin and Daryl House of West Union visited Friday evening in the Don Reeder home. Harvey Howard was a dinner guest in the Lyle Martin home Sunday. Mr and Mrs Glen Boyer visited at the Bob Bowers home Tuesday evening. Mr and Mrs Andy Grimes, Mr and Mrs Glen Boyer, Mrs Ray Hoover and Bob Bowers visited Friday evening in the Bill Ash home. It was Mrs Ashs birthday. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Gehring visited Friday evening in the Wallace McIntyre home at Hawk Eye.
Thanksgiving and weekend visitors fill tables across Cherry Valley and nearby towns. Families including Dennler, Minihan, Nickels, Christen, Butikofer, and Van Beisen hosted relatives and friends from South Bend, Kansas City, Omaha, Offutt, West Union, Elkader, and other locales. Albert L. Dennler’s birthday noted.
Sophie Groth daughter of Johannes and Guri Groth was born March 10 1879 in Clayton county and died November 24 at Good Samaritan Home West Union at age 76. She was baptized and confirmed in East Clermont Lutheran Church and engaged in church welfare. She was preceded by parents five brothers and three sisters and survived by one brother Martin Groth Elgin and several nieces and nephews. Funeral at East Clermont Church on Saturday November 26 with Rev S B Knudsen officiating Arlene Knudsen sang with Mrs S B Knudsen at the organ Burial in the adjoining cemetery Casket bearers Olaf Berg Ole Reierson Ole Blockhus Ludwig Anderson Joe Wander and Elmer Larson.
M S at Stanley Loftsgard arrived Saturday night from Vance Air Force Base Oklahoma for a visit with relatives until Friday when he will depart for the east coast and France where he will be stationed. This will be his fourth European tour. His wife and son Skipper stay in their Enid Oklahoma home recently purchased. Loftsgard is son of Mr and Mrs Mellien Loftsgard of Garder. Pvt Rodney Guyer returned Saturday from Colorado Springs Colorado for a two week furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Aubrey Guyer.

Lydia Martie and Mrs. Joe visited their aunt and friends at the Good Samaritan Home, while the Lehman and Frieden households hosted suppers. Luther College student Theora Disrud and Nancy Larson stayed with Paul Larson, and other residents dined with neighbors in Postville, West Union, and Volga. The Elgin girls group, with Grether and others, entertained the Volga Business Club wives at a dinner featuring musical acts.
A long list of Thanksgiving dinners and weekend visits unfolds across towns like Clermont Strawberry Point and Lamont. Families such as the Dennier Howards Boyles Christ and Wakos scene relatives from Waterloo Cedar Rapids Postville and Kanawha share meals and milestones.
Mr and Mrs Bob Hanson and Darrell of Elkader spent Thanksgiving and Saturday in the Melvin Hanson home. Jack Hanson of Waterloo was a guest from Thursday to Saturday. Mr and Mrs Leonard Roberts hosted Sunday evening dinner. Mr and Mrs Dale Roberts, Carol and Connie of Fayette, Mr and Mrs Gene Wenger with Lora Jee and Malinos, and Mr and Mrs Ed Wenger and Alan attended.
