Washington August 14 1898 the Spain United States war ending at 4 23 pm Secretary Day and M Cambon signed a protocol for a definite peace treaty in the White House in the presence of President McKinley French ambassador Thiebaut and aides attended the ceremony which marked the first time a protocol or treaty was signed at the White House and orders were sent to naval commands to cease hostilities.

The stern Argus of Boston, en route to New York with wrecking pontoons for Santiago, arrived at Shelburne after heavy gales. A diver was hoisted from the pontoon in distress on Tuesday night and a man aboard in Shelburne was injured when the steamer was hit.
Aug 27 in Kansas City Alphange Dayton a private in the Twenty third Kansas volunteer infantry was killed by a Union passenger train six miles away. Reports state Dayton and another were asleep on the track when struck.
A stranger drowned about two miles from there tonight with no clues to his identity. Rescue efforts continue as searchers seek the missing man and any belongings he may have left behind.
The protocol states Spain relinquishes sovereignty over Cuba and cedes West Indies islands to the United States, while the Philippines remain under U S occupancy pending peace terms. The flagship San Francisco, monitor Miantono mah, and auxiliary yacht Sylvia were fired on by Havana batteries before 6 am Saturday. A ten or twelve inch shell struck the San Francisco’s stern, tearing a foot wide hole and wrecking Commodore Howell’s quarters. No one injured. vessels withdrew under orders not to attack the Watterles after reporting hostilities suspension.
Washington reports vessels in the West Indies spared from service will be sent to ports for holidays. Major battleships will be docked as soon as possible, with all ready for refit. One ship reportedly needs no docking. New York dry-dock expected to receive ships in about two weeks. Auxiliary ships unused for main fleet to be disposed of when out of commission.
Washington dispatch reports General Shatter's forces at Santiago await transport ships to depart for the United States. He telegraphs that the early return hinges on ships expected to arrive, with only about 5,000 men remaining in Santiago while others have already sailed home.
