Last Monday the Elgin Canning Company opened its new factory in Elgin for the prison's pack of 1808. Only a few hours have been run daily so far as corn orders were delivered to test the machinery. The plant is now running and will operate at full capacity through the season, employing about 250 workers who will have steady work for the next month or two.

The piece criticizes management for dull play and low crowds and notes locals have funded fishing gear as entertainment shifts away.
