Fred Herg leaves for Bayfield, Wis., next Thursday for three weeks to treat hay fever. Roy DeSart visits relatives in Mason City. Foster in Washington, D. C. predicted a dreath in August, likely late in the month. N. H. Bakeman suffers rheumatism this week. Tim Thoman enjoys a bright day last Saturday. James Lowe and Ed Klingman head to Bowbelle, N. D. with a car of horses to aid in farming. Les Brown, Mel Kohler, and Claude Fothergill played ball at Ossian against Farmersburg, 6 to 5. George Farb reports a swollen face from a hornet sting on his nose. George Lehman and wife return from two weeks in Hot Springs Ark.
Don Stanson and Bob Shultis, both from Janesville Wisconsin, swam 1800 miles from Hastings Minnesota to New Orleans Louisiana. They left Savanna Ordinance Depot at 8 AM July 2 and reached Sabula at about 4 PM Friday, aiming for milepost 533 two miles south of Sabula by 5:30 PM. The pair continued to Clinton by Saturday morning and stayed until Monday, accompanied by life guard Oliver Towne and supporters Mr and Mrs H E Andreck of Juda Wisconsin who arrange food for the swim.
Kenneth Shaffer pled guilty in district court before Judge H E Taylor to illegal transportation of liquor linked to an auto upset near Postville. A three month jail term was suspended upon paying $28.50 in costs, though his car was wrecked and hospital bills followed the crash.
Complaints to Sheriff H. J. Nehring report two farm houses entered Saturday afternoon while families were away. One NW of Oelwein yielded $3 cash. another in Scott township produced $11, clothing, and shoes. Whether the same persons committed both crimes is unknown.

Guthrie Oklahoma Leader notes Dr. Eugene B Elliott Michigan superintendent suggests trimming rural schools from 6700 to 700 or 800 by forming central schools serving several districts. Teachers would be better paid and classrooms modernized at total cost not exceeding current expenses, a plan the paper says no state can ignore if successful.
Martin C. Christenson near Harlan has devised a drought resistant cucumber growing method. He digs a bucket into the ground beside his vines and uses cloth wicks to draw water from the bucket to the roots, yielding tender vines and large green cucumbers despite scarce local garden supplies.
Mrs Hans Friederich and daughters and Elmer Reitz leave Tuesday morning for their home in Taylor Missouri after visiting for about ten days with Elgin Relatives and friends. Congressman Marion Anthony Zioncheck of Seattle Washington drew national attention by his escapades in recent months and ended his career last Friday by leaping from the fifth story of an office building dying instantly. His bride of a few months was sitting in an automobile nearby. Zioncheck, once a sober congressman, changed to a boisterous personality blamed on a nervous ailment.
Results from the District No. 1 buttermakers meet at Elkader show Garnaville butter from Garnaville scoring 93.0 taking first. Louis Lehman’s Elgin creamery butter placed second with 92.75, while Les Timmerman’s Waterville entry was third at 92.50. Hangartner won the butter judging contest and Mrs. Hangartner also led the women’s contest. Fayette county fair 4-H stall reservations exceed prior years with a growing club building. Visitors Ulrich Heiniger and Mr. and Mrs. Gee Heiniger traveled from Indiana to West Union, Elgin, and Monona area.
