Build a Two-Tube Short Wave Receiver for KDKA DX
Leo Hugo Kruger outlines a do it yourself two tube radio for listening to KDKA on short waves. He lists parts including a B T old style tuner two 201A tubes and minor condensers with a cost estimate around fifteen dollars. The plan covers coil ranges 50 to 180 meters and notes that a long aerial is not essential while warning about harmonics and ticking from reversed speaker leads.

How Condenser Choke Circuit Improves Radio Sound
A radio receiver output circuit uses a choke coil and a high capacity condenser to enhance loudspeaker reproduction. The choke with 60 to 100 henries is wired across the speaker output, one speaker terminal bonds to the choke, and the condenser of four microfarads connects between the speaker and the other output terminal to complete the network.
Choke Coil and Condenser Speaker Circuit Described
The diagram shows a loud speaker connected in series with a condenser choke call, and in parallel with the choke coil output system. The device improves reproduction quality and allows higher plate voltage, directing DC to the plates while AC or modulated signals pass through the speaker, helping prevent speaker burnout. The choke coil must pass at least thirty milliamperes.
Regeneration Improves Oscillation in Regenerative Receiver
A choke coil of about 120 turns on a one inch diameter tube, connected in series with the plate circuit of a regenerative receiver, tends to cause the set to oscillate more readily and steadily.
Recharge a Dry Cell With Vinegar and Parafin
Instructions describe recharging a dry cell by boring two quarter inch holes three inches deep on opposite sides of the center connection. Holes are filled with cider vinegar and the openings plugged with paraffin.
Hints on Testing of Wet and Dry Batteries
Hints advise never testing a B battery with an ammeter to avoid damaging the meter and shortening battery life. Use a voltmeter for wet and dry cells, expect 144 volts on a good dry cell, and avoid ammeters except briefly for large dry cells. For storage batteries rely on a hydrometer to read electrolyte gravity, indicating charge state. A high resistance voltmeter should be used to test voltage for vacuum tube illumination.
Fixed Resistance and Condensers Improve Audio Amplifiers
Fixed resistance values around 250,000 to 600,000 ohms across secondaries clarify reception and reduce high note exaggeration. A .0005 to .001 mfd condenser in the same position has a similar effect, and condensers with resistors can transform a poor amplifier into a fairly acceptable one. They are not universal cures for distortion from bad design, but improvements often justify cost and effort.
Determine Cause of Receiver Noise in Radio Tests
To find whether noise comes from the receiver or air interference, disconnect the aerial and ground wires. If noise remains when the broadcast module is off, the fault likely lies in the set such as a loose connection, bad batteries, or a defective tube. Shake the ground wire near the connection to rule out a bad contact.
To Tune Short Waves In Set With Tap Switch Aid
If your radio fails to tune to short wavelengths, use a tap switch to connect the secondary of the filament side of the inductance coil. This allows you to cut in and out at will to adjust reception.
Ground Substitute In Efficient Counterpolls
A ground substitute is described as a practical alternative to a ground, serving as an effective counter poll. The text highlights its value in balancing a system and improving efficiency in operations.
His Choice and Circuses Echo Through Morning Noise
Uncle Fogg muses on music from nightingales and skylarks and wedding bells, but the Kansas City Times notes the day’s true delight is the circus wagons rumbling through gray dawn on their way to the show grounds with a deep resonant farcical chorus.

Handwriting judged by a Paris doctor Logre
Chicago Daily News recounts Doctor Logre, a famed Paris psychiatrist, arguing handwriting reflects personality. He notes illiterates often have legible but neat writing, fancy scripts signal mental debility, and rapid writers like doctors and lawyers tend to have hard to read script, while artists show pretty, expressive hand, with discipline also shaping legibility.

Old Forrest City Firm Paid Longstanding Debt
A Memphis Commercial Appeal note recalls a Forrest City firm that retired in 1888. On May 4, 1920, a member's son, now deceased, sent a check for 1848 to settle an old account. The letter cites years of misfortune and continued efforts to clear the debt, ending with a plea not to owe anyone if possible.
