Will Equalize Property Tax Valuations in State
The towa tax commission says it will equalize property valuations over the state on the basis of not less than 27 per cent of actual value. Announcement was made to a group representing the Iowa State Association of Assessors. Under this formula a house with an actual value of 10,000 would be assessed at 2700 and would pay the millage accordingly. The assessor group has also asked the commission to hire a specialist in industrial-property assessment. Men with this training are scarce and in demand. In Polk county, where a recent d-year evaluation was completed, assessors seek explanations for identical apartment units built from the same plans showing an $85,000 differential in assessments by Associated Surveys of Town. Eric Murrill, representing the assessing company, said the lower-assessed unit may have been underappraised and underassessed.
