Decision Helps Farmers of Iowa on Hog Car Weights
Iowa farmers scored a victory against railroads as the state railroad board set 16 000 pounds as the standard for medium weight hogs in 36 carloads. The ruling ended tariffs based on a 17 000 pound minimum that shippers feared would force charges per car regardless of actual load. The board found railways implemented the higher weight without proper hearings or board input, and shippers noted 17 000 pounds could cause injury and shrinkage. Representatives acknowledged the issue but stressed that very large hogs could be moved under the prior rule.
