POINTERS ON PAINTING FOR FARM BUILDINGS

Spring is a good time to paint farm buildings and implements to improve appearance and weather protection. Do not delay when wood rots or iron rusts as deterioration continues after painting. Outside painting should occur when surfaces are dry and the weather is not damp or cold. Buildings need painting every three to five years, sometimes more often. New wooden structures warrant a priming coat then a finishing coat within one to two months. Before exposure to weather or dampness, paint both wooden and metal parts of equipment. For exterior surfaces, two or three thin coats are better than one thick coat. The U S Department of Agriculture Farmers Bulletin 1452 F has detailed information on paints and painting.

He advocates weight-based comparisons, prioritizes home grown feeds, and supports combining tankage linseed oilmeal and alfalfa for cost effective protein.
