The Elgin Echo, a weekly paper from Elgin Iowa, is printed every Thursday by Strauch & Herman. It is registered as second class mail matter since September 1 1891 and distributed from the Elgin post office in Fayette County Iowa under the 1852 act.
Iowa school districts watch the final days of the session as HF 373 and SF 352 seek significantly increased state funding. The board proposes raising total direct aid from about 19 million to 34.6 million, expanding aid to 17.1 percent of costs and adding new aid tied to district standards. Under current figures a district now receives 27,125.35 in state aid. passage could lift general aid by about 20.8 percent and add roughly 10,000 in new aid to districts meeting enrollment and levy criteria.
The 1955 corn price support rate in commercial areas including all Iowa counties is set at 87 percent of parity, yielding a national average of 1.58 per bushel. Iowa county supports likely range from 1.49 to 1.82, with eligibility restricted to farmers meeting acreage allotments in designated commercial corn counties across 21 states.
Charles F. Wegmiller, retired railroad man, died at a Minot hospital Sunday April 3. He was 64. Funeral services were held there April 6. He had undergone major surgery at Rochester Minnesota about six months earlier.
Months ago and continued to fail gradually from that time on. Surviving are his widow, a daughter, Pauline, and a step-son, also two sisters, Mrs. James Bradley, Duluth, Minn, Mrs. Emma Grimes, West Union, and a brother, Leonard, of Duluth.
Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Richards 99 of West Union were held last Thursday from the Ilyria Community Church with burial in Illyria cemetery. She died Tuesday at the Good Samaritan Home. Casket bearers included sons in law Charles Colburn and Thos Shaffer and grandsons Raiph Shaffer Auiden and Norman Peters. She would have been 100 on August 15 and was among the county’s oldest residents. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Israel Shaffer Fayette Mrs
The Camp Fire Girls and leaders Mrs Lyle Light and Mrs Leon Shepard visited the Echo shop after school Monday as part of training. Twelve girls were part of the organization, with at least that number attending the visit, and one girl earned an extra bead for her string.
The Ilyria Livestock 4-H club met at David Frieden’s home on April 4. Thirteen members answered roll call. Fremont Ogle presented that members filled out their project enrollment sheets. The session ended with the next meeting planned.

Circle Nora to meet at Mrs G J Mosby home with Mrs Merle Clark assisting Mrs Donald Gilson in charge of the program Circle Rebecca meets at Mrs Lulu Schmid home with Mrs Edith Berg assisting Mrs Mel Kobler in charge of the program.
The Elgin Study Club met Tuesday April 5 at Mrs Charles Gehring's home. The session opened with the American Creed as Mrs Gehring read an inspirational poem and members answered roll call with an outstanding sports figure. Papers include What Can Sports Teach My Child by Mrs Lester.
Mrs Walter Falb and Mrs Charles Gehring reported on the county convention held at Fayette. Delegates led discussions on The Case Against Sports. The club voted to give 2.00 to the Red Cross. Next meeting at Mrs Martin Wenger home on April 18. Meeting closed with club project.
Governor Hoegh proclaims April 17 to 23, 1355 as Plant Iowa Week to advance the planting of trees and shrubs and the preservation of natural resources. The Plant Iowa program aims to make Iowa more beautiful and is described as one of the nation’s outstanding efforts.
The Tertia Club held an Easter hat program and discussed Women on stage and screen. Mire. Clifford Gisleson reported on Lucille Ball and Mrs Milo Olson. Delegates Helen Hayes, Mrs Henry Kuehl and Mrs Buamell Larson attended the Fayette county convention and shared day highlights. The next meeting is May 2 at Mrs Ben Schori's home with Mrs Wm Moore assisting.
Donald Rohner 21 son of Frank L Rohner and Lt Olaf recently spent a week’s leave in Tokyo from his unit in Korea. Rohner is a clerk in the 2nd Chemical Service Co and has been overseas 18 months. A 1951 Garnaville High School graduate, he entered the Army in November 1953.
Pfc Milo W Frieden son of Mr and Mrs Will Frieden Elgin arrived at Fort Eustis Virginia and joined the 105th Transportation Co His wife Marilyn Ann resides in Denbigh Virginia He enlisted in the Army in December 1953.
Elgin Local News reporters traveled from Friday through Tuesday to West Union for an assigned dinner. The trip highlighted local coverage routines and team cooperation during fieldwork.
Supper Tuesday marks Cerah Present turning three as families from West Union Luana Castalia St Olaf Monroe Independence and nearby towns join Mr and Mrs Henry Olson Hiram Olson the Olson and Schutte clans to celebrate. Guests include Dale Jensen Carl Rasmussen Qctwein Clermont and the Marvin Johnson party Easter Sunday visits the Nels Olson home. Fred Schott Sumner and Wm Kohl host dinner and supper. The Roger Walker family also visits the Howard Dahlstroms in Waukon.
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Mulford entertained at dinner on Sunday with guests Mr. and Mrs. John Tillotson and Mr. and Mrs. C J Mulford.
