Six youths escaped serious injury when a car struck the new West Decorah bridge curbing early Sunday. The driver failed to see the concrete barrier, hitting head on at high speed and damaging the vehicle. The driver was fined $100 and costs and lost his license for one year.
Mrs Margaret Mahoney 43 and her 13-year-old son were jailed in Clayton county for illegal liquor possession and bootlegging after police seized a gallon can of liquor and a pitcher full of liquor at the Mahaney home. Arrests followed the detention of Realto Larson Orville Olson and Harold Grimsted as they left the residence while Mahoney played piano at a McGregor beer tavern.
Paul Hammond owner of a Postville service station reports a man passed a $3 check and two more checks including $27 at Postville. Herman Spicklemeyer of Mechanicsville turned himself in at Decorah, brought to Waukon. Charges expected.
The Progress Club met Monday evening at Eileen Evans home with nine members present. Ball call honored Easter quotations. Program covered King Solomon by Edna Hunsberger and Esther by Charlotte Krueger, Historic Churches of the U S by Betty Kohler, and a paper on the history of the violin by Elizabeth McMillan. Marie Erhardt joined as a new member.
Mrs. Ross Downs aged 31 died Wednesday morning at her parents home south of Wadena. Formerly Esther Roys she leaves no children. Funeral services will be held Friday at Wadena.
The Legion and Auxiliary hold their regular monthly meeting at Lena Baumgartner’s home on Wednesday April 15 with Mrs B J Baumgartner assisting hostess. A good attendance is desired as plans for the county meeting to be held here later this month will be discussed.
