Lawrence Dodge of Marshall town was arrested Saturday and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He appeared in Justice of the Peace court and was bound over to the grand jury with bond set at 0.
Berlin Memorial Day services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Jackson township cemetery. A quartet will sing, Steamboat Rock band will perform, Barbara Jo Whigham will read the Gettysburg Address, Mrs. Peter Peters will give the Memorial Day address, Rev. Robert W. Baker will deliver invocation and benediction, and graves will be decorated. Rev. Baker will also deliver the Unknown Soldier address.
Town attorneys will participate in the 4th annual meeting of the Iowa State Bar association in Des Moines June 6 with Rex R. Bateson state president saying the theme is Iowa Probate Law. About 700 lawyers from every county are expected. Features include County Attorneys association, Iowa District Judges association, Junior Bar, Board of Governors, and Iowa State Bar Foundation sessions. David W. Maxwell will speak at the banquet June 7.
The El Dora library will be open 1 30 pm to 6 pm daily in June July and August. It will also offer extended hours from 7 to 8 30 pm on Mondays Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Sara Riemenschneider of Eldora won the pon y naming contest from 4 017 entries with the name Commodore. Judges drew the winner from 31 final entries after duplicate submissions were noted at Anderson Drug Store. A second item notes a dance review Wednesday at Wellsburg school gym at 8 p m hosted by Jane Dutton with Eldora students performing.
Eleven vehicles were registered in Eldora over the past week including ten cars and one truck. More than sixty priests attended a solemn high mass at St Marys Catholic church Eldora to celebrate the 25th year of Rev George Mahoneys priesthood. He was ordained by Archbishop Francis Beckman on May 21 1932 and a $1000 cash gift was presented at the dinner by parish members.
In Nevada at the youth building Fr. Mahoney receives a gift during a silver jubilee celebration of his ordination. Attending were Fr. Mahoney’s mother Mrs. Tom Mahoney of Alta Vista Iowa and Fr. White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank White of Eldora, both deceased. Fr. White had high school ties to Eldora.
News arrives of Mrs. Marvin C. Nehring killed May 20 when a tornado struck near Kansas City Missouri injuring their five year old daughter Dean who suffered a fractured skull. Another daughter Diane age 10 was unhurt. Mr. Nehring was in Kansas City at the time of the incident.
About 750 ponies were auctioned over four days at K. E. Reisinger and Sons National All Pony sale in Eldora. A registered Shetland yearling stallion named Gold'n Star of Silver Crest sold for a world record $10,000 to Elis E. Dunn of D and D Pony Ranch, Dallas. The sale saw high prices and broad participation, with top ponies averaging $4,470 for the ten best and top 300 averaging $1,136.56, while Paul DeMarco of Hampton bought two ponies for over $10,450 and resold them for profit to Ralph Brewer of Marietta, Oklahoma.
Hardin county 4-H girls hold Rally Day June 1 at the county youth building in Eldora with the election of new county girls 4-H officers for 1957 58 led by Susan Nehring. Speakers include Rev HE E Basye and county boys clubs greet the gathering.
Eldora stores will close all day Thursday, May 50, in observance of Memorial Day.
Don Wilson of Eldora will be the speaker at Steamboat Rock Memorial Day services at the Steamboat Rock cemetery Thursday. He is an attorney with Lundy Butler and Lundy. Services start at 10 a.m. The Steamboat Rock band will play the Gettysburg Address will be read by Roger Gene Gast. The boys quartet will sing.
A contract was awarded to Luther Construction Co. of Oskaloosa for 25 culvert extensions to widen county roads. The bid amount totaled $19,609.98.
Winners of the annual 4-H Fun Day were chosen Saturday and will attend Rally Day at the youth building on June 1. In the Dreaming song contest Kay Schnir ving of the Union Peppy Pals won first with Marjorie Pulse of the Eldora Happy Hustlers taking second. Eleven contestants competed. Sharon Harms of the Alden Clover Climbers won first in Four Leaf Clover, Linda Murray of the Providence Pearls earned second among 13. Sylvia Andrews of the Tipton Teammates won Country Girls Creed with Starla Williams of the Providence Pearls second, topping 18 others. Reverend John K. Moore judged.
M D Holland and Sons of Branch Arkansas will hold a dairy sale at Eldora Livestock Sales Pavilion Wednesday selling fifty dairy cattle including Jerseys Guernseys and Holsteins. All cattle are TB and Bangs tested. Eldora Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts plan Memorial Day services at Eldora cemetery Thursday 11 am with opening prayer tributes by Legion and VFW Auxiliaries remarks by H Schmitz and Eldora high school band music. A rifle salute and Taps will close the service. Marion Munsinger and Walter Wehrman chaired the event.
Myrna Otilda Bird of Wellsburg graduated from Upper Iowa University at the close of the summer session. She was recognized at commencement exercises in the Col grove Walker auditorium on Monday. She majored in elementary education and received a bachelor of arts degree.
Gov. Max R. Clark of Dubuque and superintendent of schools, brother of Paul Clark of Eldora, was named Rotary district governor at the Luernne convention in Switzerland. He was elected governor of district 597 and will assume office July 2.
Tom K. Helgeson, son of Mr and Mrs Kerner Helgeson of Radcliffe, is named one of 162 merit scholarship winners at the State University of Iowa.
A two volume biography by Wm. T. Hutchinson, from Sunrise City Minnesota to Hardin county roots, portrays Frank Lowden as a pioneer in farm economy. It covers his early teaching, law study, and work to boost soil conservation, farmers co operatives, and agricultural policy.

The Hardin county fairgrounds track hosts seven harness races starting 7 45 p m with around 60 horses in the Memorial Day program. A special feature offers a free Shetland pony to the ticket holder, with youngsters under 12 admitted free with a parent. Entries from Bedford Liscomb Corydon Maquoketa Vermillion and others. Dwight Mateer voices the event with James Nutter as judge. gates accept 1 admission while grandstand remains free. Twenty one horses wintered on site include Pagel Myers Liscomb and Crippen. Conrad L. Githens of West Des Moines is named Steamboat Hock boys coach for the fall. He will receive a BA in physical education from Simpson College in June and is married with one child. He replaces William Rachik, who taught a year at Steamboat Rock and will teach at Calimus next year. Githens will coach basketball and baseball and teach business education.
A meeting of all township ASC election committees in Hardin County is scheduled for tonight at the county extension office in Eldora. County election board members will provide instructions for nominations and carrying out assignments as committees from Alden to Union prepare for a June 12 deadline and July voting window with ballots counted July 10.
