Rotary And Soil Conservationists Meet Today

Frank H. Wendell Iowa Conservation Service will speak on conservation to Eldora Rotary Club this noon. About fifty soil conservation staff from eleven counties will join the meeting and tour county conservation areas observing practices. Obhie McMurray will join the group on their one day tour.

Mrs. C. W. Meek Injured in Auto Accident

Mrs. C. W. Meek, 80, of Eldora, was hospitalized at St Lukes hospital Cedar Rapids with severe bruises and a fracture after a car collision three miles southwest of Shellsburg on Wednesday. Her daughter Mrs. Wesley Emmert of Eldora, and Kathy Emmert, escaped with minor injuries. The other driver, from Cedar Rapids, also escaped serious injury. Mrs Meek was en route to Parkers Grove cemetery to decorate her husband’s grave.

Memorial Day Harness Races Postponed at Hardin County Fairgrounds

Rain and a muddy track forced the Memorial Day harness races to be postponed from Memorial Day to Wednesday June 12 at the Hardin County Fairgrounds. No rain date was set earlier. The racing card remains the same and a Shetlands pony will be given away. About 60 to 170 horses were expected, including 21 head wintered at the fairgrounds. Notable entries include Bill Pagel with 10 heads, Norman Myers of Tiscob, eight, and Frank Crippen with three.

Union Farmer Injured When Tractor Overturns

Bruce Barnes aged 60 of Union was injured Wednesday when his tractor slipped into a ditch and rolled onto him. He suffered a compound dislocation of the left ankle plus lacerations and bruises. An emergency truck and wrecker responded. he was taken to Eldora Memorial hospital and then to the Veterans hospital in Des Moines.

Red Cross Swim Blanks Deadline Set in Eldora

The South Hardin Red Cross chapter announces a deadline for swim blanks to join the learn to swim program. Mail by next Monday to Jim Foster of Eldora who will oversee the program with guards Jim Berg and Kelvin Huehn. About 800 children participated last year. classes start Monday June 15 at Pine Lake for children and adults in Eldora and surrounding areas.

Denison native named Hardin County extension home economist

Marlene Peterson of Denison will start July 15 as Hardin County extension home economist in Eldora, replacing Mrs. Jane Primus. A graduate of Iowa State College this month, she will focus on girls 4-H club work, adult home economist duties, and farm family programs, based at the county extension office. She was employed through joint action of the Hardin County extension council and Iowa State College, with key advisory groups including the extension council, the county girls 4-H committee, and the Hardin county family living committee.

Longtime Hardin county figures Rev Aiken C Kruse Steamboat Rock and Rev D Allan Martens Dubuque faculty member received Doctor of Divinity degrees at the University of Dubuque 102nd commencement. Kruse, earliest living alumnus, organized churches and served as supply pastor after retirement. Martens, since 1946 with Dubuque faculty, is interim minister at First Congregational Church and moderator of Waukon Presbyterian.

Don Abney, longtime Grundy Center football coach, resigns to take over as coach and teacher at Iowa Falls for the next school year. He led Grundy Center football and track to strong records over four years and will teach biology and algebra while coaching football and track at his new school.

Eldora Recruit Completes Boot Training at Great Lakes

Dale D. Mitchell son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Mitchell of Eldora graduated from recruit training June 1 at the Naval Training Center Great Lakes marking the end of nine weeks of boot camp. The exercises included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries. The recruit is trained and ready for duty with the fleet.

Linda Murray Elected County Girls 4-H Club President

Linda Murray daughter of Mr and Mrs W D Murray of New Providence was elected president of the Hardin county girls 4-H clubs Saturday at the annual Rally Day at the youth building. She is 14 and a member of the Providence Pearls. Other county officers elected were Carol Gaede vice president John Tysdal Concord Cloverettes secretary treasurer Pamela Montandon Alden Clever Climbers historian and Karen Engel Pleasant Peppy Teens reporter. About 300 4-H girls leaders and mothers attended. Three clubs had perfect attendance and two wore uniforms. Club historian books were presented to Concord Cloverettes and Pleasant Peppy Teens for attendance and uniforms. The Grant Go Getters had perfect attendance but not in uniform. Rev E E Bayse of Grundy Center spoke on Life is too short to live little. The business meeting was led by Susan Nehring with help from Celia Perkins Mary Beth Helvig and Sandra Schwebke. Others participating included Miss Murray Sharon Harms Kay Schniring Marjorie Pulse and Sylvia Andrews. Each leader and county 4-H committee lady received a corsage and refreshments followed.

Copeland resigns to join Keller Loan Co in Eldora

Audrey Copeland, after four and a half years at Union-Whitten Savings Bank in Union, resigns to work for Keller Loan Co in Eldora. She will replace Mrs. Roger Horn, who leaves to pursue post graduate study at the State University of Iowa and teach third grade in New Providence next year. May Rainfall Across Eldora and Hardin County

May brought heavy rain to Eldora and Steamboat Rock with 5.25 inches and 6.43 inches recorded respectively from May 10 to month end. This compares to 3.4 inches last year, nearly doubling the May total and suggesting a yearly total over 36 inches if trends continue.

Social Welfare Cut Hits Hardin County Nursing Claims

A state wide reduction in social welfare funding will reduce monthly payments for 51 nursing cases under old age assistance in Hardin county starting July 1. Cuts range from 4.50 to 9 dollars per case, tied to a 16 percent nursing share among 319 old age cases. If aid to dependent children is trimmed, 61 Hardin families, 143 people, face impact.

Sales Event Committee to Meet At Chamber Office

The Sales Event Committee will meet tonight at 7 30 in the Chamber office to discuss plans for a public auction and white elephant sale. A kick off breakfast for workers is set for Thursday at 7 30, with three two member teams contacting businessmen for donations. Cordes Services Held Here Men

Charles C. Cordes 90 longtime Eldora carpenter died in a Des Moines hospital. Funeral services were at Longenecker Funeral Home Eldora with Rev. Dewey Lamprecht officiating and burial in Eldora cemetery. He lived with various children, born in Bremen Germany, married Charlotte Diehrsen in 1894, mother of eleven with two died in infancy, survived by many relatives including Bertha Huizel and George Cordes.

Iola Severseike daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Severseike Hubbard was named valedictorian at Radcliffe high school commencement exercises. She edited the school panel and was on the annual staff participating in mixed chorus girls glee club band dramatics F H A and staff duties. She will attend Iowa State Teachers College next fall.
