Board of Review Okays 20 Changes In Assessments
County assessors report a small number of protests over 1949 assessments as the Board of Review, with El Dora and Iowa Falls reviewers, handles 75 to 100 callers at most locations. The board recommended 30 adjustments by the E. T. Wilkins firm, 14 for mathematical errors and 6 for opinion changes. Many taxpayers asked questions, even without protests, and Union had only one caller. Taxes this year reflect assessments by the appraisal firm under the county assessor system.

Dean Barnes to Direct Hardin County 4-H Youth Work
Dean L. Barnes of Marcus will direct the Hardin County 4-H clubs and Rural Youth program beginning June 16 after graduating from Iowa State College with an agronomy major. He served in the army before college and has worked as a temporary youth assistant in Harrison County the past two summers. Barnes comes highly recommended by Iowa State. The county has lacked a full-time youth assistant since January 15, 1949, with interim duties filled by various staff and students. A home economist for rural women's activities was not hired, plans calling for a temporary appointee for summer to supervise women’s projects and 4-H work ahead of fair time.
