Rural donations push Hardin county fund toward goal

Rural donors boosted the youth building finance drive in Hardin county to 24025.17 by Saturday noon, aided by Pleasant township Farm Bureau and Eldora and Alden township 4-H clubs. The drive aims for 40000 with many individual gifts from local families and farm groups, moving past the halfway mark.

Eldora businesses plan early closures to let residents attend the first round girls state basketball tournament in Des Moines. The Tigerettes face Clarence at 2 p m with potential Thursday or Saturday closings depending on results. Tickets and viewing details were outlined by Chamber of Commerce officials. Amsberry Trophy Goes to Janice Fuller of Owasa

Janice Fuller 17 of Onaga wins the seventh Amsberry Memorial trophy for the Pine Lake conference’s outstanding feminine cager. The Eldora school board notes four low bids as the district accepts bids for upcoming needs. Fuller, a 5-4 senior and natural leader, sustained a leg injury in the Pine Lake tournament but finished the season averaging 20.8 points per game in 17 contests. She plans a teaching career after graduation and has been active in several school activities.

Fish Fry Proceeds In March Slated For Youth Building

Pine Lake Wildlife club members voted to hold a family fish fry on Friday March 25 with all proceeds to go to the youth building finance campaign in progress throughout the county. The fish frys normally net from 250 to 300 dollars.

Peggy McNertney Heads to Three Month Psychiatric Training

Peggy McNertney daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence McNertney of Eldora traveled to Aurora Illinois yesterday to begin a three month psychiatric training at Mercyville Sanatorium. She is a junior year nursing student at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and visited her lover in Eldora over the weekend.

Wellsburg Man Killed In Car Crash Thursday

A Wellsburg man, 64, died Thursday when his car left a dead end road two miles north and west of Wellsburg. John Gelkan, lifelong Grundy County resident, was rushed by neighbors to a Wellsburg physician after his chest was crushed by the steering wheel. He was born near Holland in Grundy County and is survived by three daughters and one son, two brothers, a sister, and 17 grandchildren. Services were held at the Murra home and Wellsburg Reformed church with burial in the church cemetery.

Dragline Operator Killed In County Road Crew Accident

Harald Pooch Mathews 41 of Eldora died when a county dragline tipped and crushed him near W C Ines farm, as he tried to jump clear. A road crew worker on a nd clearing job, Mathews had worked for the county since 1938 and is survived by his wife and son. Body taken to Angrie and Creps Funeral Home.

Boy Slugged Officer In Escape From Transport

Deputies Lowell McCormick and Bob Barr, based in the sheriff’s office, reported a former training school youth being transported by a parole officer slugged the officer and escaped with his car. The officer received medical care Monday noon in a Nevada hospital. The incident occurred along highway 65 near Colo, with the youth slipping out of handcuffs, slugging the officer, and dumping him from the vehicle before heading to the southern part of Iowa. initial reports indicated the youth was driving north.

Eldora approves bids for new 18 classroom school

Four low bids totaling about 380 thousand dollars for construction of Eldora's proposed 18 classroom elementary school were accepted by the school board. The lowest general bid was 263,780 dollars to Wells Company Inc. of New Altoon. electrical bids led by Hob Electric Co. of Waterloo at 28,675 dollars. plumbing by Stell Mayer Plumbing and Heating Co. of Marshalltown at 22,000 dollars. Architects Brooks and Borg expect equipment to move in within a week after contracts are signed.
