Ralph Krenzin of Iowa State College notes two bets for summer forage. One plans to switch from oats for grain to pasture, the other to plant sudangrass within a week. Grazing oats with similar seeding offers short term high quality forage for several weeks.
Agricultural guidance from Krenzin recommends planting sudangrass by June 20 to provide 6 to 8 weeks of growth for early pasture and cattle feed through frost. He notes grazing should be cautious on soft ground, with seedling protection, and that later planting yields less total production. Piper variety may reduce prussic acid risk but seed supply is limited. pure seed is acceptable.
Cattle Feeders Day will be held at Iowa State College at Ames around the middle of July according to animal husbandman C. C. Culbertson. The date will be announced in June. Twelve lots of steers have been fed for this event some since October. Some cattle were wintered on cornstalk silage with corn cobs and regular silage fed to other lots. All steers are finishing on corn for 60 to 90 days.
Windrowing is often more efficient than direct combining for oats. Dale Hull of Iowa State College extension recommends windrowing when oats are nearly ripe but risk storm damage or heavy weed growth, to improve threshing, remove heavy straw, and aid storage quality. He notes windrows should rest on strong stubble to prevent ground contact and improve pickup.
Iowa State College extension engineers describe a 20 minute test using a 500 to 1000 gram scale a deep thermometer screen wire tin can vegetable oil and heat. Weigh 100 grams hay in oil heat to 145 C 295 F then weigh again. Each gram lost equals one percent moisture.
The Clark soybean, product of USDA and state station breeding, originated from a 1941 Lincoln Richland cross in Iowa and refined in Illinois. Tested across 120 sites from Nebraska to Delaware, Clark outyielded Chief Wabash and Perry and showed higher oil content and quality. Seed becomes available for general planting next year, with plentiful supply by 1955, and is expected to suit the southern three Iowa counties best.
C Wilson Harder discusses national sales tax proposals and income tax shifts. He argues taxes may burden lower earners, while higher earners benefit, and notes postwar tax trends, wartime levies, and foreign aid funding linked to monopoly economies. He cites Reynaud on global production growth and calls for anti trust enforcement before aid flows.
The Eilers family reunion met at Pine Lake lodge on Tuesday June 16 with 94 in attendance. A noon and evening potluck followed a day of visiting. A telegram from Ray Eilers and family of Cleveland Ohio noted their absence. Numerous relatives from Iowa Minnesota and Nebraska visited including Johnson Bruns Minetts Eilers Karstens DeVries Bilers Baird Loffler Hanson Fisher Oelman Sentman Folkerts Bear Sears Hilers Luiken and others. The Auxiliary members also attended.
War Clean the Lesson hall on the afternoon of June 26th. Anyone wishing to help will be welcome. Local social notes record visits among Wellsburg Marshalltown and Hubbard area families with birthday club gatherings and hospital trips. Several residents are noted visiting friends in Deaconess hospital and Cedar Rapids.

It confirms the company’s filing on December 31, 1962, under Chapter 615, Title XX insurance laws, and notes admitted assets of 4570, 293.92 with total liabilities of 61,406,180.00. It records capital or guarantee fund of 2,000,000.00 and surplus over all liabilities of 21,278,063.92, dated Des Moines May 16, 1963, signed by Commissioner Charles R. Fischer.
