Farm Outlook Shrinking Chick Stock Not Slowing Egg Prices
Iowa State economist Donald J. Hunter says producers will not cut chick raising as much as earlier surveys predicted. April egg incubator numbers fell 9 percent from 1954, while May settings were down 2 percent. Hatch rates rise, hen numbers may stay enough lower to keep egg prices higher than last year. May shows 19 percent fewer chicks on farms nationally, 23 percent in Iowa. April hatched 270 million chicks, 115 million broilers. Broiler hatchings up 4 percent. Egg production per hen rose to 18.5 in April as laying productivity improves, helping production outrun demand. Town egg production has peaked. fewer eggs go to hatching as producers shift to consumption and storage markets.
