In about 1902 Steamboat Rock town council bought two 30 gallon steel chemical tanks and 50 feet of hose with nozzles for each of two two wheeled carts. The carts, mounted under the old school building steps, were moved by hand and operated by William Hartman the engine operator with Ben J. Eilers as janitor, marking the town’s first mechanized fire gear prior to the 1928 school rebuild.
