Straighten And Brace Buildings Damaged By Wind
Iowa farmers may find that their farm buildings were damaged by wind storms this spring. S. S. DeForest of Iowa State College urges immediate bracing, noting outward pressure causes failures. He favors triangular bracing, knee braces tying rafters to walls, and corner braces to straighten slanted structures.

Cows Forage More When Hoofs Are Trimmed
Floyd Arnold extension dairyman at Town State College advises trimming winter hoofs to boost foraging and production. With cows indoors, hooves grow and elevate the toe, shifting weight to the heel and causing soreness. He recommends lifting the foot, paring the sole, and trimming the toe with a chisel until pink reveals proper balance.

Nitrogen Side Dressing Of Corn With Cultivator Attachment
Iowa State College agronomist H B Cheney says straight nitrogen fertilizer used as a side dressing with a cultivator can yield good returns for corn. Rates vary with stand density and moisture, and timing around the second cultivation or mid June is typical, with possible use through mid July if rains are ample. Fertilizer tubes placed behind the second or third shovels place nitrogen close to the plant during peak growth, though this method can slow cultivation during busy seasons.
