Push Market Pigs To Show Or Sell
Iowa State College animal husbandman Thomas Wickersham urges 4 H pig clubs to push market pigs to 180 pounds for fair eligibility and best sale prices. Pigs weighing 100 to 180 pounds are deemed not marketable, so clubs should provide clean housing, shade, water, and balanced rations including shelled corn and protein supplements to reach market weight by mid August. Underweight pigs are discounted and clubs should finish pigs to market weight as a completed 4 H project.

Antibiotic Pellets Trial On Sow Pucklings At Iowa State
Iowa State College conducts on farm tests implanting antibiotic pellets under the skin of suckling pigs to assess preventive benefits. Gordon C. Ashton notes 100 litters on a cooperating private farm, eight litters received implants at Ames this spring with no definite results. The study, finished in May, argues antibiotics may aid early piglet health when disease pressure is present and housing is clean, but show little effect in clean, disease-free settings.

Abortion not always caused by brucellosis
Dr. John Herrick of Iowa State College warns cows may abort from diseases other than brucellosis such as trichomoniasis vibriosis and leptospirosis. He urges vaccination and routine testing to rule out brucellosis, isolating aborting cows, burning or burying aborted material, and avoiding new bulls from infected herds.

Windbreak cultivation urged to reduce weed competition
Iowa State forester Richard Campbell advises cultivating newly planted windbreaks to curb weeds before hot dry weather. He notes weeds steal moisture and light, hindering tree hardening for winter, and urges 2 to 3 years of cultivation with careful hoeing and tractor work to avoid root damage, as herbicides are not yet selective enough.
