Four Barriers To Conservation
Iowa State College researchers questioned 144 farmers in 10 western counties about erosion controls. They identified four barriers: cost of changing farming methods, tenant-landlord cost-sharing gaps, high mortgage and living expenses, and doubts about erosion control necessity or risk. Farmers overestimate required reductions and few trials of contour practices. Soil losses average about 21 tons per acre annually with two uncrossable gullies per farm.
