Fire Destroys Barn and Shed South of Union
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a barn and cattle shed on Walter Hanson’s farm one and a half miles south of Union. Howard Johnson spotted the blaze about 4 p.m. Damage is estimated at $1,200. The barn measured 60 by 60 feet and the shed 26 by 60 feet. Hay, oats, and cattle feed were lost. a sow and litter perished, while several calves, ponies, and pigs were saved.

First Iowa Fence Erecting Machine Demo at Follett Farm
The first Iowa demonstration of a new fence erecting machine from United States Steel and its American Steel and Wire Division will be at Guy Follett farm southeast of Eldora Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wayne Maley will conduct for farmers county agents and highway officials. The device attaches to a tractor, drives posts, strings wire, and tensions it with a hydraulic clamp, handling woven or barbed wire and potentially cutting fence erection time in half. It aims to reduce back breaking labor and lower costs, with applications for highway right of way fencing and industrial uses.

Progressing On Schedule At Northrup King Plant
Work is progressing on schedule at the Northrup King Seed Corn plant in Eldora. The 390 by 125 by 16 foot warehouse houses a processing tower south of the office, with twin dryers near the camera and offices in the middle. At present 88 men are on the project, with as many as 38 during peak periods, construction by Gothman Construction Co of Gladbrook began in March and the plant is to be completed by September 1 to handle this year’s corn.

Hardin County 4-H girls participate in home furnishings projects under guidance of county extension assistant Henrietta Van Maanen. Activities include finishing wooden pieces, making cloth items, and matting and framing pictures with many exhibits planned for the Hardin County Fair August 15 to 19. Workshops ran in Cord, Concord, Union, Eldora, Aden, Pleasant, Grant, Hardin, Sherman and Ellis in June with more planned in early July.

High bidder correct in Hardin County auction notice

Eldora F F A class under Byrl Selinus conducts a corn planting study with three 20 acre plots using wheel-track planting and preemergence weed control. Plots plowed June 2 and sprayed June 3. weed spray applied at about three pounds per acre. The method eliminates multiple dicing and cultivations. A full cost income summary will follow harvesting.
