Iowa Pig Production Rises Steadily Across Spring
The 20 percent boost in Iowa spring pig production tops the national 15 percent rise. Iowa faces a 10 percent fall farrowing increase, below the nationwide 13 percent gain, per economist Sam H. Thompson of Iowa State College. Fall sow totals reach 856,000 in Iowa and 5,832,000 nationwide, with spring pigs at 69,040,000. The national fall pig crop and spring totals push about 96 million head, largest since 1943. Thompson notes summer sow markets will be higher than last year as more sows are marketed.

State proposed changes expand nursing licensing and road work
The plan would license and regulate practical nurses, legalize farm owners to improve a nearby secondary road with county maintenance, raise medical care payouts in workmen compensation, and hike license fees for autos trucks and farm trailers. It also calls for faster daytime and slower night bus speeds, a new state peace officer retirement system, higher state and school appropriations, higher unemployment and workmen compensation maximums, an emergency county levy increase, more hatchery output, and record U.S. grain exports for 1948-49.
