Hills Wilson Elected New Chairman Of County Supervisors

Hills Wilson was elected chairman for 1953 at the Hardin County Supervisors first meeting. Wilson, who defeated in the June primary, has one year left in his term and will rotate in as chairman, replacing Martin Ryken. Allocation of townships and offices followed, with Bevan and other county officials to serve new terms. Dr. W. A. Johnson named county coroner and banks designated as official depositories.

Livestock Valuations Headed Down in 1953 Assessments

Deputy assessors begin rounds across the county for the 1953 tax rolls. Livestock values drop under a new three class system. Hogs fall from 45 to 30, work horses from 30 to 20, feeder cattle from 135 110 to 66, sheep 12 to 7, real estate similar to four years ago.

4-H Leaders Tag 198 Baby Beeves At Nine Stations

On December 29 and 30, 4-H leaders weighed and tagged 195 baby beeves across nine stations. County extension youth assistant Herb Allen noted a strong rise from 136 calves last year and predicted a robust Hardin County baby beef show next fall. Additional calves from FFA clubs and about 40 calf on feed head the Junior Cattle Feeders project, with final tallies pending.

Fertilizer Meeting Scheduled at Eldora High School

An educational session on fertilizer use and types will be held in the Eldora high school auditorium tomorrow evening at 8:00. H. S. Vorkes of the Virginia-Catolina Chemical Corporation, Dubuque, will conduct the session and answer questions afterward. Crosley Farm Store is sponsoring the meeting.

Waterman Rites Held at Radcliffe

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from Bergeson Funeral Home for Mrs. Ida Waterman who died at home of her daughter Edith Grna in Temple City California. Rev. A B Gedeve of Caureh Church officiated. Burial followed at Radcliffe Cemetery by her husband George Lerman a son Ben and daughter Birdie.

Hardin County Hunters Fined In Pheasant Cases

Illegal possession of pheasants led to fines for JM Ackley residents Ben T. Van Hove and Harvey B.R. Debuhe in mayor court. Van Hove paid 100 for illegal pheasant possession, 210 for a stop sign violation, and 50 for a detective multiplier. Debuhe paid 100 for pheasant possession. Richard McWherter of Hubbard faced fines totaling 270 for illegal pheasant possession, possession of a muskrat, an assembled gun, and hunting without a license. Minor defendants, including the Reiks brothers, were also cited for liquor possession.

Fire Destroys Gifford Residence in Sunday Blaze

A Sunday morning fire completely destroyed the interior of a Gifford residence owned by Lee Allbright, leaving only the shell. Fire units from Eldora New Providence Whitten arrived and fought the blaze for over two hours.

Final Rites Held Saturday For John Albert Page

John Albert Page 59 died after a yearlong illness at his Eldora home. Final rites were at St Mary's Catholic Church with Father George Mahoney officiating and burial in St Patrick's Cemetery Hampton. He moved to Eldora in 1943 as a railroad agent after service in Geneva Grinnell and Albert Lea. Surviving: wife Irma Van Mouten two daughters Rosemary and Diane and two others, three grandchildren and one brother. One son predeceased in 1943 at Pensacola Air Force training.

Rules Announced for Cattle Feeders 4-H Project

The county 4-H committee met at the county extension office on December 23 to set rules for the Junior Cattle Feeders project in Hardin County. Participants may feed three to five head, steer or heifer, weighing 350 to 700 pounds, with calves weighed and tagged by a county official and the project starting by February 1, 1953. A livestock expert will visit to grade and price calves for margin calculations. projects aim to improve efficiency and feeding practices. Participants must make pen exhibits at the county show to receive credit, but sale of cattle is not required.

Meeting Plans Mass Chest X Ray Program for Hardin County

Preliminary plans for a countywide mass chest x ray program in 1953 will be laid this afternoon by the Hardin County Tuberculosis and Health Association executive board. The program would offer free chest x rays to adults and students from 7th grade up with physician referrals for younger children.

New Year Eve vandals are suspected in two holes found Friday morning in the front plate glass window at Wood Auto Company. The damage suggests a B B gun. Dick Lee, son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Lee, reported his windshield and a car window broken Thursday night on Polk Boulevard in Des Moines as further vandalism tied to the incidents.
