State skill tests given to Eldora and rural students
Tests required by the state department of education were administered to Eldora and rural pupils on Tuesday and Wednesday in September. Flooded Pond Opens for Pine Lake Skating
At the request of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, the state conservation department flooded a rearing pond at Pine Lake for ice skating. Flooding was completed this week and skating will be supervised by Pine Lake custodian PD. W. Hicks. Officials say the flooded pond will offer excellent skating with smoother surface than Pine Lake, which remains snow covered and rough.

Big Diesels To Be Activated Here Next Week
Final touches on a $500 000 diesel electric installation were underway this week with operation expected next week. Eldora manager Robert Ipson of States Electric said power would be cut early Wednesday for a controlled hookup from the Morsters units to the power plant, delaying some services while notifying hospitals, schools, bakeries and newspapers by telephone.

Lawmakers to Stay at Local Hotels During Session
State Senator Rex Bateson will lodge at the Hotel Fort Des Moines and Representative Paul M. Walter at the Savery while the legislature is in section. They will attend the Republican caucus on Saturday and return to Des Moines Monday for the assembly. Both expect to be home in Eldora and Union most weekends from Friday afternoon through Sunday during the season.

Farmers Must File Evidence by Jan 10 for 1948 Program
Walter E. Hauser, county committee chairman, announced that farmers must file all evidence of approved practices from the 1948 Farm Program. Eldora High School will start a 10 week adult evening course on Wednesday June 12 with four subjects agricultural commercial homemaking and art. The young farmers program already met its first class on Tuesday January 4 led by Leroy Sandholm. regular classes include topics on farm problems DDT fire prevention weed control and sewing management plus typing offered by Miss Van Houten and run by Mr Sandholm with classes at 7 pm.

Two Hubbard cousins Misa Miriam Faust and Misa Justine Granner fled China as Communist forces advanced. Faust taught at the Girls Union mission school in Changsha. Weigand Boy Dies In Airplane Crash
Kenneth Weigand an 18 year old grandson of Homer Weigand of Eldora and son of Mr and Mrs Leo Weigand was killed New Year’s morning when an airplane piloted by his uncle crashed near Brainard Minnesota. The funeral was held in New Hampton. The family moved from Eldora to Lake Villa after living in New Hampton.
