Aids In Test PFC. Donald C. Coen, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Coen of Union, helped test the Army’s hot weather field uniforms during jungle maneuvers in the Panama Canal Zone. The uniforms are being analyzed at Fort Lee Virginia by the Army’s Quartermaster Field Evaluation Agency. Coen, a truck driver in Battery C of the 764th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion, entered the Army in February after working for Weldon Brothers Construction Company.
Eldora business houses close Friday for New Year observance. Hardin County courthouse offices also shut Friday and reopen Saturday, Jan. 2, with full day hours per county auditor R A Scott. Courthouse offices normally close at noon on Saturdays.
NEW PROVIDENCE Arthur Church 65 a longtime school custodian here died at University hospital in Iowa City shortly before midnight on December 25. Final rites were held yesterday at the New Providence church and burial was in Honey Creek cemetery. He had been ill for some time and in hospital about two weeks. He is survived by his wife and five children Mrs Harold Berding Eldora George Chicago DL Leonard Waterloo Robert Newton and Pauline Phoenix Ariz.
Virgil Schmidt, 25, longtime supervisor with Iowa Electric Light and Power Co., has been named Eldora commercial manager. He succeeds R. B. Ferguson, who moves to Knoxville and other offices on Jan. 1. Schmidt will oversee nine towns including Hubbard Whitten Steamboat Rock Union New Providence Lawn Hill Liscomb Bangor Owasa. Ferguson transfers to Knoxville and handles Pella Chariton offices. Ferguson served in World War II and Guam. Schmidt worked two years in line and two in sales, joined the company in 1946, and is a Tama high school graduate with a growing family.
Earl T. Johnson, Waterloo Social Security office manager, says self employed persons must report 1953 earnings with income tax returns. A Water loo Social Security representative will be at Elderd Iowa courthouse January 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
A printed error in the Hardin County Democratic Central Committee resolution swapped letters, turning correction into corruption. The piece explains the typo sparked distress among Herald-Index staff and reprints the full resolution praising officials and journalists for guiding needed changes following the board of supervisors resignations. The corrected text lists Hittis Wilson, Frank Bevan, and Martin Ryken and thanks state and local offices and Iowa Falls reporters.
Eldora welcomes George E. Janssen as mayor and Paul H. Schaz as third ward councilman. Nyquist departs after 13 years, guiding a final swearing in by the outgoing mayor or city clerk. The new administration meets first Monday, with committees to be appointed and a city clerk to be named.
Grant township leads the Hardin county Farm Bureau member drive with 47 percent of quota met, 44 paid members toward a 93 quota. Sherman and Hardin follow with 39 and 38 percent paid respectively, among a county total of 535 paid from 1717 quota across 13 townships and Alden to Union.
The Pleasant township Farm Bureau will meet Tuesday at p.m. at Roughwoods hall. The program will be 1954 Outlook. In charge of the entertainment is Charles Svendsen. The serving committee is comprised of Dean Eggleston Albert Ziesman Arnold Ziesman Beverly Clark Bob Papenius John Wasson and Ed Fiene.
James H Thompson 37 of Cedar Falls has purchased half interest in the Eldora Greenhouse effective Jan 1, announced by Bud Smith. Thompson, longtime associate of Rainbow Greenhouse Waterloo, moved his family into the north house at the site. Smith, with the Greenhouse since 1940, will accompany his father M H Smith in the business 35 years total. The Smiths plan a two month Texas visit beginning next week. The New Providence United Women’s Society meeting scheduled for Jan 7 is postponed to Jan 4 at the church.
Hardin county schools discuss consolidation with Whitten and Union districts and additional Grundy and Marshall counties. A Jan 6 meeting will review the proposed merger, including district land value pupil counts millage and reaction. If favored a formal plan and petitions to Hardin Grundy and Marshall boards may follow alongside district lists Felix 3 5 6 Melrose 5 8 Bangor 2 3 4 5 Liberty township.
By yesterday morning the Hardin County ASC office reported 522 corn loans processed for 1953 with 50 to 60 applications pending. Loans averaged 1200 to 1400 bushels. Applications run about on par with last year, according to office manager Gaylord Thayer. Applications accepted through May 31, 1954 at a sealing figure of 1.55 dollars per bushel.
The Hardin Coury Index will publish one day early this week with the edition printed tomorrow for Thursday delivery. All news and advertising copy must be submitted to the newspaper office by 2 p.m. today.
Final rites were held at the Church of Christ for David Schuler eight, son of the church pastor. He died after a pony mishap in a barn at the fairgrounds last Thursday. Born January 13, 1945 in Moberly Missouri, he moved to Eldora with his parents in 1947. Interment was in Hampton Cemetery with music by Imogene Chamness and Paul Williams. Pallbearers included Lewis Simcox Hobart Small Donald Schwarck Leonard Feuerhelm. Survivors include his parents a sister Sondra a brother Daniel and grandfather Charles Soper of Hampton.
Thrift Bucks in denominations of fifty, twenty five, and three ten dollar awards will be given to Eldora shoppers tomorrow afternoon. Last week's winners included Ray O Wickham Steam boat Rock in Grahams Carl Schultz in the Pine Room Arlie Williams in the Sinclair Service Station and C W Cockerham in the Hardin County Savings Bank.
E F Gidel cashier of the Ackley State Bank was elected president of the Hardin County Bankers Association at a recent meeting held at Pine Lake Country Club in Ackley promoting local financial leadership and professional ties.
Eldora Memorial Hospital will name the area’s first 1954 baby as a baby king or queen with gifts from local merchants. A full list of prizes includes a quart of milk daily for 30 days, 50 diapers washed and dried, and many other items from merchants such as Pfander Jewelry Woodward's United Electric Brown Insurance and Eldora Laundry. Eligible babies are born at Eldora Memorial to residents of the Eldora trade territory. parents must submit names addresses birth time date sex and weight to Eldora Newspapers. The 1953 winner was Lynda Sue Travis. the 1954 winner arrived at 6 40 a.m. New Year’s Day.
Result in Eldora shows officers elected for 1954 include Clark Bramwell of Hardin County Savings Bank as vice-president and Robert Barlow of Iowa Falls State Bank as vice-president along with the secretary treasurer position.
In the New Providence vicinity four farm sales are listed for early January. On January 6 Clarence Beach will dispersal 36 head of Brown Swiss cattle at the farm south of New Providence, starting noon. January 7 features Claude Winters closing out livestock and farm equipment with nine cattle, 36 hogs, and machinery, plus lunch by Berlin Church ladies. Also January 7 the Beach Sisters farm near New Providence hosts a joint public auction with Tom Phears consignments and 91 head of livestock beginning 11:30 a.m. Auctioneers are Knowles and Heltibridle. A January 14 sale date is set by Robert and Lawrence Beach with details to follow.
Mrs. Irene Norman aged 54, formerly of New Providence, was killed in a California automobile accident Thursday. Her son Kenneth of Des Moines and three brothers Roy Verne Rhodes of Zearing and Wayne Rhodes of Dows drove to California by auto on Christmas Day. She spent her girlhood in New Providence and lived in Sacramento, California.
Rooks Implement will hold an auction sale at their present Eldora location one block west of the courthouse square Thursday starting at 1 AM for machinery and 1 PM for appliances. Over $75,000 in new and used implements and appliances will be offered as the city plans a free parking lot at the present Rooks site and the adjoining Vinton Produce location.
