The Hardin County Fair lists a full day of 4-H judging and exhibits including hogs, cattle, swine, sheep, and junior divisions. Highlights include 4-H demonstrations, a Wild Animal Show, stock car racing, and a prize drawing for a new car for ticket holders on the fairgrounds.
Benjamin Wesley McMillian 82 lifelong Eldora resident dies Sunday morning at Benton Choate home. Rites set for 2 pm tomorrow at Andrle and Creps Funeral Home Eldora with Rev. Dewey Lamprecht officiating. Interment Eldora Cemetery. Survived by three sisters, five nephews, three nieces. five brothers predeceased. Pallbearers listed. organ and vocals planned. flowers arranged by local volunteers. Condition of Lew Owings in same area hospital after last week crash, reported stable.
Two men escaped injury in a car truck collision at a country intersection a mile and a half north and one mile west of Whit ten Friday afternoon. Floyd Montz of Whit ten drove the car and Melvin Rowe of Des Moines drove the gravel truck. Deputy Sheriff Bob Barr investigated the crash.
C T Schimmele former Cashway Supermarket manager buys the Eldora store including inventory and fixtures from Martin Bucksbaum who will focus on Cedar Rapids shopping center plans. Schimmele, 34 year WWII veteran, will be affiliated with a major Midwest wholesaler and continues to run the local market with the same shelves.
Eldora realtor C O Rubew reports the Amos Hively property at 1914 20th Avenue sold to Hazel Choate with possession Aug 15. Graveside services for Dr Gertrude D Ganfield at Berlin cemetery this afternoon at 3 pm, officiated by Rev Ralph B Imes.
The 84th Hardin County Fair opened at 8 a.m. with amphitheater shows daily except Friday afternoon. Auctiones and lodging in divisions begin at 9 a.m. The main draw is a 1955 Ford Mainliner to be given at 10 p.m. Friday. Tickets sold by merchants. holders must be on grounds. A tip from secretary Wilson Hadley suggests writing the first and last ticket numbers to verify the winner.
The Eldora Chamber of Commerce committee voted 56 to 3 not to urge closing local shops during the county fair. Court house offices will close two afternoons, today and Thursday. Admission remains low with free entry for under 12 and 35 cents for 12 and older per session. Judging begins at 9 a.m. for 4-H demonstrations, exhibits, and junior livestock, continuing through Thursday.
A dirt cave in at a Vinton Heights housing site in Eldora left Marvin Krause 48 seriously injured. He was buried to his chin after a wall of dirt collapsed while he worked in a sewer ditch. coworkers and a dragline helped free him and he was rushed to Eldora Memorial Hospital.
Bar-B-Que planned by the Hardin County Livestock Association to be served at noon Thursday. Planning committee members include Mrs. Carl Lettow, Mrs. Rufus Hoelscher, Mrs. Kenneth Reisinger, Mrs. Harald Snyder, Mrs. Howard Martin, Mrs. Carl Granzow, and Mrs. Ray Tesne.
Three neighborhood families Marvin Walters Roy Ryan and Bud Lewis set up a tent on the fair grounds called the Chuckwagon to serve meals during the fair.
Maas, owner of the Sinclair service station, is building a 30 by 40 foot cement block addition. The project will include a wash rack tuneup equipment and wheel balancing entainment. Cost is about 3500 dollars.
Hardin county's emergency truck endured heavy use over a three day period from Wednesday to Friday last week. Three accident calls and one ditch cave in were responded to. Two of the accidents occurred on unknown locations.
Construction on the county youth building at the fairgrounds progresses rapidly with six bents in place for the roof and walls. Weldon Brothers of Iowa Falls supply the pre stressed concrete bents while brickwork advances on the auditorium façade. The project includes a 60 by 120 foot auditorium with a 24 by 60 stage, a 51 by 40 wing housing three meeting rooms and a kitchen, and a basement usable as dormitory or meeting space. The roofing contract totals 3240 dollars with a 15 year bonded guarantee. Visitors are being planned for the unfinished sections next week.
