Science Improves Quality of Corn Through Breeding
Tremendous improvements in corn quality have come in 20 years and more work continues at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. Corn breeding involves many scientists with defined roles in variety development. Botanists study growth mechanics, plant pathologists probe diseases, entomologists and zoologists address pests, chemists test grain contents, and agronomists develop lines. Many varieties are discarded, only a few pass trials for possible release.

Build Self-Feeder To Prevent Waste
Extension specialist William Zmolek advises on building a rain shielded self feeder with wide overhangs and adjustable grain openings to limit waste. A 10 foot feeder suits 40 to 60 calves with fencing posts 16 inches apart, keeping space for 600 lb calves. Keep the feeder full, avoid sudden feed changes, and follow pesticide label directions.

Fertilized Pasture Boosts Hog Profits and Beef Yields
The Middle West Soil Improvement Committee says high yielding pasture is the most economical feed source for livestock. With proper fertilization and legume mixes, pasture can produce up to 100 pounds of digestible nutrients for about 75 cents, saving about $3 per hog in feed. Beef yields per acre have risen from under 100 pounds to over 100 pounds with pasture improvement, soil nitrogen, phosphate, and potash boosting both yield and protein.
