Severe weekend storms in Hardin County brought heavy rain wind and snow. A large barn on Fred Mitchell's farm southeast of New Providence burned after a suspected lightning strike despite firefighting efforts. no livestock losses reported.
Three inches of snow fell in Eldora on Easter Sunday April 17 boosting Beagan’s snowfall total to 61 inches, a possible local record. Lightning damaged several homes in New Providence area and an Eldora airfield plane owned by Slim Westerhausen suffered about 150 dollars in damage when a hangar was blown down by strong winds.
Eldora Easter program postponed from last Saturday due to bad weather will be held Saturday April 23. Local Chamber of Commerce says the start time will be announced in Friday’s Hardin County Index. Merchants plan extra prizes to accompany the rescheduled egg hunt activities.
A storm toppled a hangar onto a single engine Areneca plane. Westerhausen reports the left wing to be recovered and fuselage holes repaired. Power outages affected Eldora Whitten and surroundings, with multiple highline poles down and many lines broken. Snow measured three inches Sunday, one of the largest mid-April totals, causing numerous ditched vehicles and telephone outages until Monday.
Iowa farmers urged to report flood or high water damage to farm stored price supported grain. Dewey E. Eller says reports allow immediate steps to move undamaged grain and dispose of damaged stock by sale. Government absorbs losses from flood damage, with 19 counties reporting damage so far.
The Hardin County Extension Family Living Committee will host a husband wife dinner at Blanche and Ethel's Tea Room in Eldora on April 28 at 6 30 p m Reservations are through the Extension Office or committee members with Friday April 22 as the deadline Iowa State University extension economist Wallace Ogg will be principal speaker discussing the basic principles behind world affairs The committee lists members from Eldora New Providence Union Hubbard Ackley Iowa Falls and Alden with several named hosts and hostesses
Funeral services were held Monday morning from the Sacred Heart Church of St. Anthony for Mrs. Nellie Dunn age 83 who died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Marshalltown. She is survived by a son Harry of St. Anthony two daughters Mrs Nellie Megan of St. Anthony and Mrs Laura Oswalt of Kansas City Missouri two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Eldora senior class stages The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners tonight in the school gym directed by Lloyd McDole. Joe Saylor stars as the accused with Greg Harrison as the slain boy’s father in a mock trial adaptation of Reginal Rose’s television play.
Hardin county advances toward completion of the 1960 Census of Population and Housing with final mopping up starting Thursday, April 21. Interviewers will verify blue household forms left at every fourth home and visit households not yet returning forms. They will collect missing data and correct blanks via in person visits and phone calls.
Franklin farmer Donald N Johnson of Ackley County charged with uttering two checks for livestock totaling 2168.00 and 2001.00. He received a continuance and was released on a 3000 dollar bond at a Friday hearing in John E Shugar's Justice Court in Ackley. Johnson, a livestock dealer, lives north of Town Falls.
The Hardin Soil Conservation District announces a soil conservation speech meet on Tuesday April 26 at 7 30 p m in the youth building Eldora sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary. Topic is How Soil and Water Conservation Affects My Future. Contestants come from Radcliffe Alden Town Falls Steamboat Rock and New Providence. District winner advances to the Regional contest and regional winner goes to the state contest in September. Public invited.
In Eldora and surrounding towns hospital notes list multiple named patients. Birth announcements include Union Mrs John Frakes with a boy on April 14 and Steamboat Rock Mrs Darald Previchs with a girl on April 14, alongside other listed names.
A report of several small-town court penalties includes Mike Bernard Sowman and Sheila Clapsaddie of Eldora fine for failure to display valid registration, plus costs. Donald E Ames and Kenneth Welch of Eldora fined for registration and license issues. Acden Terfehn of Wellsburg fined for speeding. Douglas Winters of Eldora cited for failure to stop at a stop sign. Total fines range from five to twenty dollars with additional costs.
The Eldora city library board invites bids for a complete lighting restranging project at the library building with a deadline of Monday May 2. In other news, head librarian Mrs Alice Van Derveer has resigned after years of service and a replacement has not yet been named.
Miss Gladys Doty, longtime Union resident, died Sunday night at Elora Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are pending at Blersborn Funeral Home in Union. Doty ran a Union flower shop before retiring and had previously lived in Eldora where she operated a nursery.
The District 5 spring Parents- Teachers Association Conference will be held at the Hardin County Youth Building Eldora on Tuesday April 20. Registration 8 30 to 9 15 a m at the Youth Building. Rev H C Short of the local First Baptist Church will give the invocation. Eldora P T A president George O Bryan will welcome with Eldora superintendent Paul A Simons presenting greetings. A Rec P T A committee led by Mrs Ralph Bright will serve coffee during registration. Lunch by Blanche Ethel's Tea Room Eldora. Eldora High Madrigal group directed by Mrs Leona Froning will perform. Afternoon tour of the State Training School for Boys will be featured. Pre registration for the convention is handled by Mrs Myles Miller.
Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs. Dick Seggerman, 83, mother of Clarence Seggerman of Eldora, at Minonk Illinois. She died in Chicago Saturday after a lingering illness. Survived by husband Dick, 80, and seven sons. Clarence and Robert Seggerman of Eldora attended.
Carter Produce of Union invites the public to an open house on Wednesday April 26. Free gifts will be given with each order of pulling. Coffee and doughnuts will be served and attendees can view the egg grading process.
Hardin county 4-H hosts Fun Night at the Eldora youth building starting 7 30 p m. The event will name a typical 4 H boy and girl from Cynthia Montandon Donna Hadley Mary Moore Kaye Ann Hellmich Kurtis Kelsey Kenneth Reed David Vinton Dennis Lattow after an interview and vote by attendees. Carnival booths include basketball throw dart games bingo telegraph booth bowling ring toss and a jail house with special entertainment from Jackson Pleasant and Providence 4-H clubs.
Eldora Community School reports 27 teachers sign for 1960-1961 year, with fourteen resignations. New hires include Nielsen, Keel, Hein, Eckes, Gast, Prosser, and Mrs Holmes. Returning staff feature Marsden, Mahaffey, Froning, Lehnus, Bishop, McDole, Gaulke, Wachtel, and others.
The El Dora American Legion Post will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday April 20 beginning at 8 p m. The gathering aims to discuss postponed activities and plan upcoming community events with members urged to attend.
Linda Bekemeier daughter of Mr and Mrs John A Bekemeier of Eldora was elected senior president at Cottey College Nevada Missouri for the coming academic year Cottey is a two year college and she graduated from Eldars high school in 1959.
Chris Malsel aged 51 and Verna Butcher Sr, both residents of Iowa Falls, obtained marriage licenses in a local civil records filing, confirming their intention to wed. The couple’s details were logged by county clerk officials as part of standard nuptial documentation.
