London woke to reports that Pretoria had surrendered and Johannesburg would fall to the British, with dispatches from Earl of Roslyn and other sources claiming the Boers collapsed and Kruger fled. Claims of officers dictating surrender terms in Johannesburg circulated but unclear.
Several friends of General Otis have arrived in San Francisco to greet him on his return to the United States. He will explain the Philippines situation to President McKinley in Washington and then proceed to Rochester New York where his wife and daughter have been living.
Kansas City market on May 31 shows cattle receipts 7 500 with prices 4.50 to 4.85 for native and western steers and cows and heifers around 2.00 to 4.90. Hogs receipts 13 700 opened steady to lower and closed steady to strong with top 4.95 and bulk around 4.80 to 4.85. Sheep receipts 5 000 remained steady.
