A Pretoria dispatch states the Boers will fight to extermination with 10 12 thousand troops in the field. They vow no prisoners and reject surrender, following Kruger and Botha, while British fear rising disaffection as resistance hardens.
A St. Petersburg dispatch reports two conspiracies to assassinate the czar. One plan targeted a jubilee ball for which the czar was alerted to cancel, thwarting the plot. The second occurred during a ceramic exhibition visit with the czar's mother, where an unknown man rushed the czar, carrying a time bomb that exploded moments later.
A 16 year old El Paso girl who entered the house of Blanche Allendorf in Chihuahua was freed after the mother sought her child. The Allendorf woman was fined 50 dollars and the mother and girl returned to El Paso aboard a train. Veres Irwin case and reduced bond for prizefighters noted in Dallas and Galveston.
Lincoln Neb March 20 Thompson nominated for the senate by the republican caucus last night was defeated in the joint session today. The legislature held that both senators must be chosen at one time with Rosewater leading on thirty votes and Meikeljohn receiving fifteen.
The Texas Senate engrossed a bill to incorporate Mutual Life Insurance in Texas. Bills authorize another artesian well for the San Antonio asylum and oversee the marriage of minor Frank and Bertie Williams. The House killed the maximum freight rate bill after a heated debate. Shaw of Dallas hints it will appear in the next state platform with the railroad commissioner possibly running.
Portland march 20 three hundred officers and men of the Sixth Cavalry stationed at various points in the northwest left here for San Francisco and thence to the Philippines.
Washington March 20 It is understood today Griggs will retire from the cabinet the last of next week and the president will appoint P. C. Knox of Pittsburgh attorney general Cox will succeed.
Capetown reports a battle between British and Boer forces. The day before yesterday nine Boers killed and seven wounded, while the British suffered one dead and ten wounded in the engagement.
The governor confirmed the appointment of C. K. Bell of Fort Worth as attorney general this morning.
An unsourced rumor from London to New York reports rising tensions between British and Russian forces in Tien Tsin with possible clashes. Dispatches claim reinforcements, warships nearby, and international interest as officials urge restraint despite mounting danger.
CAPETOWN March 20 Treason uncovered within British forces in South Africa. On General Kitchener s order three soldiers were shot dead at dawn for their crime. Others were sentenced to hard labor imprisonment for life. Rumors speak of disaffection and high level discussions on punishment.
In Chihuahua on March 20 a fatal shooting followed an argument at a ball between Francisco Regalado and Francisco Nunez. Nunez allegedly drew a revolver and killed Regalado, then fled. He reportedly gave $100 to his father to flee the country before surrendering, declaring Nada me sirve. He is now incomunicado.
The royal yacht Ophir with the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall entered Gibraltar Harbor at nine in the morning, greeted by salutes and bands. Governor Sir Robert Biddulph and fleet admirals welcomed them as crowds cheered. They landed at noon and will stay a day. The voyage across the Bay of Biscay was stormy with high waves.
Governor Otero announced several appointments with council confirmation including John S. Clark as coal oil inspector Edward J Bartlett as solicitor general J H Waugh as treasurer A A Keen as land commissioner H L Bursum as superintendent of the penitentiary Lafayette Emmet as librarian and F W Clancy as district attorney second district in Santa Fe New Mexico.
Albert Ives, renowned Detroit banker aged 91, died after a long illness. The failure of his banking house occurred during his sickness, and he died thinking his firm remained prosperous. The news of the collapse was withheld from him to preserve his peace in his final days.
Denver applied to Andrew Carnegie for a public library with site and maintenance guarantee. Carnegie declined phrasing there are too many millionaires in Denver.
The Southern Pacific plans extensive warehouses and wharves at Guaymas Mexico under a Mexican promise to remove onerous charges. Currently goods in transit cannot land at the Guaymas wharf and face a ten percent extra duty at the customs house. Under the new arrangement SP and Pacific Mail steamers will transfer through freight in bond as in the United States.
San Antonio Tex March 20 Four troops of the Tenth cavalry from this department are ordered to the Philippines. General Hare of Thirty third infantry fame who is a major in the regular army has been assigned to the Twelfth cavalry now organizing here. A Washington dispatch says McKinley travels through San Antonio and El Paso on his westward trip but will likely skip Austin.
Railroad officials in Denver denounce Governor Otero for granting a one month respite to Black Jack alias Thomas Ketchum who faced execution at Clayton New Mexico. They fear the delay could enable a rescue plot as he is moved from Santa Fe to Clayton. His friends vow he will yet be freed.
In Denver on March 20 Governor Orman telegraphed President McKinter with a cordial invitation for a visit to Denver and the state next month during his California trip, coordinated with the chamber of commerce.
