The American fleet bombarded Santiago again today lasting from eight to ten. London reports Santiago captured after Admiral Sampson reportedly bombed the Merrimac and shelled inner forts for three hours. Cervera and the city are said to have surrendered with forts at the harbor entrance silenced.
The navy department reports that Sampson seized control of the harbor at Guantanamo on Tuesday. The bay lies east of Santiago with a narrow entrance and serves as a strategic rail terminus, offering shelter for troop transports.
Havana garrison numbers forty six thousand regulars with an equal number of volunteers. The interior is abandoned to insurgents who attack picket lines near the capital. Blanco is expected to surrender after weak resistance while surveillance tightens on Cubans and native Spaniards. Provisions are scarce despite claims of six months stock. Reconcentrados and laborer families starve as bread remains denied.
June 10 dispatch reports Rear Admiral Sampson enforcing strict anti torpedo boat measures after Spanish night raids. Imperial Potentate Albert McGaffey of Denver will call the council to order at 10 o clock Tuesday morning with receptions drives and banquets planned for wives and visitors.
Northfield Massachusetts reports the 1905 Moody led summer conferences opening next week with a large advance guard. The dedication of the Dickinson Memorial Library occurred as Moody prepares to deliver the Sunday commencement sermon for Northfield seminary graduates. The world student conference runs July 1 for ten days with speakers including Bishop Potter Rev R P Mackay Chancellor William F McDowell Rev J Bell Johnston and Professor E I Bosworth.
